M.2 SSD temperature

Hello Everyone.

On IX formula MOBO there is a cover, that covers the M.2_1 slot.
AIDA64 shows that my ssd is 65 degree C in idle.

I'm afraid, that it's going to be too hot when i'll start playing.

I'm thinking about moving the ssd to M.2_2 port, that is at the bottom of the MOBO.
It's not covered by anything, and is located perpendicularly to the MOBO.
Or maybe just remove the cover from M.2_1 slot?
Can you please share your thoughts about this?

Also, will there be any difference in performance between M.2_1 and M.2_2?
Or maybe some other problems?

Yeah, it's pretty annoying. My ssd was in the mid 70s in M.2_1 so I moved it to M.2_2 which of course means losing 2 sata ports with x4 speed. Of course if your ssd doesn't leverage x4 speed then it doesn't matter as much if it's in M.2_2 @ x2 speed. Luckily it's just the BD drive that I lose so on the rare occasion I need it I flip it back to x2 speed in bios until I am done with the disc drive. I guess I could have removed the cover but might not have made a huge difference.

I am hoping they come out with a nice 3d print file for a fan or something like they have with some of the other boards, maybe a heat sink cover? Till then, or someone can persuade me that 70-100c temps on a samsung 950 pro isn't causing long term damage I'll just have to make do with M.2_2. Just seems an oddly poor design choice on a board that's all about water cooling etc.

As for your performance question, if you bench your ssd and it get's between about 800MB/s and 1.6GB/s then it is using X4 speed. If you get under 800MB/s then it's only using X2 speed so moving to M.2_2 at X2 speed makes no difference from M.2_1. (X2=1GB/s, X4=2GB/s, this is all assuming PCIE 2.0, with 3.0 max is 4GB/s and you really would need X4 I think)

Glad to see, that I'm not the only one who have came up with the plan of moving to m.2_2.

So, does this help you? If your ssd was 70+ in M.2_1, what is the temp in 2_2 now?

I don't care for loosing 2 SATA ports, because I only have 1 sata HDD and a dvd drive.

From MOBO description page.

*2 When the M.2_1 Socket 3 is operating in SATA mode, SATA port 1 will be disabled.

*3 When the M.2_2 Socket 3 is operatin in PCIe 3.0 x4 mode, SATA ports 5 and 6 will be disabled.

Meaning that 2_2 can work x4 mode like 2_1.

Now sits at around 40-45c, happens to jut out over my bottom radiator in M.2_2, so get's a direct airflow from the 120mm fans.

The main problem is (at least with the Samsung 950 pro) that although the drive rating allows for it to run as hot as 75c perfectly safely, it does throttle pretty seriously as soon as the drive starts to run hot. According to manual, my MP500 starts to throttle at 80c.

Don't realy know how much will gaming increase load on the SSD, because it's not that much data to transfer... i guess.

After reading the article, I'm starting to think about putting the SSD to PCIe slot with an adaptor like this:

If that's for PCIE 3.0 x4 then yeah, don't see why it wouldn't.

You mean in the pcie adapters? No, I would expect it works the same way a pcie sata/sas adapter works. Though I don't know what complications there would be, if any, with booting from a pcie m.2 adapter.

If Asus would do a 3d print model for the pch cover at the very least we could make a replacement that we could put a metal heatsink into. I wonder if you could use a ram waterblock like https://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-ram-monarch-x2-acetal-6942 and 3d print a cover that goes over the metal parts and goes where the pch cover goes to watercool the m.2_1 in place. That would be a great solution as the option with a small fan over the slot isn't ideal as small fans tend to be very noisey (well, I mean there are better ones but great for what's available).

Will experiment with 2_2 slot.

If nothing else, I'll add a cooler to the front of the case.

I just read a review on this M2 drive.
They were hitting 67C with it in the open and a 120mm fan blowing on it. It throttles at 80C
Its speeds are in line with last years offerings but nothing stellar.

It runs hot, While you may be able to get it to run cooler than it does under the cover and may improve that more by putting a fan on it, there are other offerings that perform far better and don't run as hot as this one does.

Nothing can touch a Samsung.
