Ok, so I'm a newbie when it comes to the Overclocking, but I have a few things here and I'm hoping someone can answer them. First and foremost, I have tried this 1001 BIOS update and it keeps telling me flash failed. I dk why. With that said, I'm still using the 0902 build andcant get nowhere near 4.0ghz on the 1700x. I have the Hyper Evo 212 and my temps range between 45-55c at idle on current 3.8ghz. I haven't adjusted the cooling fan profile yet, but when I even try using the stock 4.0ghz profile from ASUS, I can boot and use the PC for the most part, but the temps are in the 70's at idle. Then if I try to do any gaming or benching with Cinebench, it crashes. I know there's a lot more to it and a lot of tweaking to be done to get it right, but I wanted to make sure that the temps I'm reading are normal. Im currently at a 3.8ghz with the RAM at 2400hz and having no issue. Temps are good (45-55) and I can bench/game without any issue. Just wondering about the temps when jumping to 3.9-4.0ghz. Just seems like a massive spike for 100mhz. If this is the wrong place for this, please let me know. Otherwise any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.

What method are you using to update the UEFI? If you're using a flash drive and getting that message, try using a FAT32 format instead of NTFS.

Overclocking w/ power saving intact, sleep issues

    Hi, first-time ROG user here.. I've got a CH6 (v.0902), R7 1700, 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance 3000 CL15 @2600MHZ @ rated 15-17-17-35. Two q's:
    1. I've been pulling my hair out trying to OC my 1700 to around 3.7-3.8. It OC's fine, but is there a way to OC and KEEP the power saving? I want it to downclock when not being used. I know changing the multiplier automatically puts it into OC mode, but have heard of others having success here. I've tried changing the P states, which will either lock it at the OC speed or the downclock speed, even under load (bug?) Ryzen master works for this, but it's not permanent..but makes me think it can be done. Temps all OK, except for odd bugs of showing 0c, especially after changing CPU speeds in BIOS.
    2. If my PC goes to sleep, it acts weird. The CPU fan stays running and everything else shuts down, and it won't come back up. After a forced reset the fans kick up to 100% and stay there until a cold boot. Is this a bug or do you think my CH6 is bad? I just disabled sleep for now. Thanks for any help here!!

ssues with CH6 not happy when paying big money for a motherboard.

1st problem is can some please explain why if i use the tuning wizard in the bios which overclocks my cpu to a solid 3.8 ghz and ram to 2197mhz but what i dont understand is how come my temps using that overclock are cooler then standard temps as u can see in the image i have uploaded.

how exactly do u get the ryzen cpus to step back in windows has anyone found out what features u need to adjust in the bios to get the cpu to step back ?

2nd problem memory issues is getting beyond a joke and ive gotta say Asus i am very disappointed that the only Kingston Ram u support is the Kingston Hyperx Fury ram. So i have now brought the ram listed above and u say its supported ram according to ur website but guess what it won run at with the memory frequency being manually set to 3200mhz and the dram voltage to 1.35v and same with 2933 with 1.35v. but using both and tried using 2933 xmp profile the CH6 is having none of it so this needs addressing and fixing as ur saying its supported and fully working ram but turns out ur support for it aint that great.

3rd problem can someone from Asus please answer this question ? what exactly has been changed to the cpu performance and behaviour coding since bios build 0902 as i have run the 0038 and 1001 and 1002 beta builds and i have found with all these new bios build the temps of the cpu are hotter then the temps on the 0902 build hence the reason why i am still using it.

    Hi,

    1) I'll check this out when I can. Would look at voltages and possibly (unlikely) MI Skew being different than default.

    2) The QVL contains the following footnote: "Memory module with memory frequency higher than 2666 MHz and its corresponding timing is not the JEDEC memory standard. The stability and compatibility of these memory modules depend on the CPU’s capabilities and other installed devices."

That means stability will vary from system to system and is not guaranteed to be plug-and-play. On top of that, the platform microcode is still being worked on by AMD in order to improve memory compatibility. It may be some time before we see more consistent memory overclocking results. When purchasing memory, it's always wise to subtract at least 500 MHz (DDR4) off the fastest memory speeds a motherboard has been validated for. That way, you stand a better chance of plug-and-play working. And we shouldn't forget that, XMP isn't even an AMD technology - it's an Intel tech. Means there is even less chance of it being stable across all boards, CPUs, and memory modules (the timings are rated for an Intel platform).

    3) Likely the Sense MI Skew options, as this changes the value of the reported temps. These CPUs report Tctl which is used for fan controls, and it may report temps that are 20 C higher than the actual CPU temp. As with all things related to this platform, there will likely be more updates for this in the future.

WOW, I'm surprised with that. I've followed that other thread by elmor since I found it at this site, installed 1002 same day you did without issue. Well I did notice that my soc was running up towards 1.5v and over so I manually set it to 1v as a base while I was messing with it for the first time `cause I saw my ryzen temp staying up in the 50s (HWmonitor in windows). I was running 4GHz easily but the fans started getting noisy so I dialed it back because this rig was super quiet when I first set it up last week and I liked that!

    in reply to Raja@Asus

okay i look forward to hearing ur response then.

the memory side of things i dont expect the XMP profiles on the ram to work but manually setting it @ 3200mhz with manual Dram voltage @ 1.350v shouldnt be a problem and like i said ur website log for the supported memory for the CH6 my ram is listed under 3200mhz and all my parts are brand new see i dont see a problem. i should expect to see me get 3200mhz on my ram as all my parts are brand new.

when is AMD due to release any new micro coding for the memory support in bios ?

i am not using any fan controls off the motherboard at all as im using custom loop water cooling kit and have all my fans powered straight from my PSU. so does this mean i can change the MI Skew option ?

one other thing aswell can u please tell me why the latest update for the CH6 was the 13th march which is official on the Asus website. but then if u look up the Asus Prime Pro X370 on the Asus website the latest bios for that board was released on the 23rd march and it address both of these. 1.Improve system performance. 2.Make CPU temperature more precise. ??

I have my 1800x at 4Ghz (100x40) @ 1.35v stable. My ram which is 64GB of F4-3200C14Q-64GTZSW TridentZ ram is running at 2666Mhz 14-14-14-34 @ 1.35v. Using bios 1001 from the first post.

I dont have an issue so much with the ram not doing 3200, early bios and all and even if it never gets to 3200, it runs plenty fast for me.

My question is, is it a limitation of the bios to just hard-shut off cpu frequency scaling when you're overclocked? I turned the bios option for the EPU power saving back on and windows doesn't appear to use any of the P-states. I then made all custom P-states and still, windows shows the cpu as always being at 4Ghz. Has anyone gotten P-states to work in windows 10 while overclocked on this motherboard?

Linux is fairing a bit better, which isn't bad since it's my primary OS. Right now, with stock 4.11-rc4, I have 2 P-states available in linux. 2.2Ghz and 4Ghz. Not bad, but i'm sure it'll support the platform better as drivers mature.

So, another thing, when i made my custom p-states, the bios said i wasn't making any changes when i saved it, yet the P-states did get saved. I'm just wondering if the reason why Windows isn't seeing any is related to why Linux only sees the 2. I'd figure even if either OS isn't initiating the cpufreq changes and letting the hardware do it, itself (1ms freq changes are nice), i should still see the cpu frequency vary in monitors.

Also, is there documentation (memory addresses ...etc) anywhere on the motherboard and cpu sensors? Linux currently has no hwmon drivers for ryzen or the motherboard and it seems it wouldn't be a huge issue to at least tweak the K8 temp driver to work with ryzen (which i can do). Aside from all the nonsense with temperature offsets etc.

And if that's not enough, the clock on this motherboard drifts like a mother when overclocked. Make sure if you're in linux, that you're saving the system time to bios at least prior to reboot. Seems windows will do this automatically (or the drift isn't occuring because the cpu frequency is 4Ghz all the time while linux can move between 2.2 and 4) but at least with Debian unstable, it does not do this by default. You can easily be a day off on the bios clock in 1 night.
