Strix 1080 OC compared to Strix 1080 Ti OC

I am a happy owner of a Strix 1080 OC. It pushes out amazing frame rates, runs EASILY at 2 GHz, never gets above dark green (LED color set to temperature) on the most demanding configurations, and the fans rarely spin above a noise level that I can hear. I couldn't ask for anything more perfect (it seems I won the lottery here, as I know a lot of people complained about heat issues).

So......

Does anyone know how it compares to the Strix 1080 Ti OC? Assuming I could sell mine for $500, is it worth upgrading? Or did I luck out with a perfect board that I shouldn't touch? From the only review yet at Tech PowerUp, it seems that the latest version of Asus' highest end board is not that spectacular compared to the base founder's edition in the way that mine is. I was hoping for a more significant difference, both between the Strix 1080 Ti and the FE 1080, as well as between the Strix 1080 Ti and the Strix 1080. But, neither seem earth shattering, much like how Kaby Lake over Skylake was kind of boring. Am I being too quick to judge? Anyone have any thoughts?

I read the Tech Powerup review. I wasn't very impressed with it, as they compared the Strix OC Ti to the base model 1080. Now, granted, I could just find articles on the Strix 1080 (like https://www.hardocp.com/article/2016/06/27/asus_rog_gtx_1080_strix_gaming_video_card_review/) and do the comparison myself between the two articles, but I was looking for a more in-depth comparison specifically targeting the best of the best from the last generation and the potential best of the current generation. That to me is more interesting than what the TPU article does. But, that's just my opinion.

Yeah, TPU only compares the GPU in question with the reference models. But it's not so hard to find a side by side comparison if they've reviewed both.

Just put the graphs beside one another.

The ROG Strix 1080 Ti is the first Nvidia OEM board to be tested so there aren't many comparisons available of the Ti itself. But you can sift through Guru3d's various VGA test articles to get a comparison of previous generation releases to the 1080 Ti FE and the Strix. They tested a lot of cards so you can get a pretty comprehensive taste of performance figures.

I'd like to deploy my troops in her country.

Basically now your 1080 would only be useful for holding open a door for example...

I get that you're being sarcastic, but I'm not sure what your ultimate meaning is. I think it's clear that the Strix O8G is still a very capable card, and will be for years. I was more curious about the difference between it and the latest Ti. For instance, is the Ti a barely noticeable improvement, or is it substantial? Obviously, I know that my 1080 still has value, or I wouldn't think that I could get $500 for it used 🙂

Yeah...just kidding...

Ti is about 25% more performance than 1080 overall...sometimes as little as 10% sometimes as much as 30%...this for vanilla FE cards. The OC versions will simply scale the same...maybe 5% more performance but proportion will stay the same.

It is what it is...no point denying the performance is there....just have to decide if you need/want/want to pay for...that performance increase.

Thing about 1080Ti is it's a single card 4K solution at a more reasonable price than TitanX...it will be popular because people can say goodbye to SLI and still run a 4K screen

Mine does 4K without SLI, so there's not a massive change there, either. The Ti will do it better, certainly.

I guess I was hoping for a much more impressive jump between the two cards. I feel like the O8G is such a big gain over the 1080 FE, and the O11G is a smaller relative gain over the 1080 Ti FE, that the O8G to O11G is looking to be not that impressive (from the few comparisons I can make at the previously mentioned Guru 3D link)

Well...you might "feel" like it but testing I've seen shows about 5 to 7% over 1080FE...no doubt similar to 1080Ti over 1080TiFE...advantage is in VRM...longevity maybe...cooling in the right circumstances and aura etc...not really performance...slap a watercooling block on any of them and they will deliver the same more or less

Yes...when we're talking 4K we're talking the magic 60FPS at highest settings...1080Ti 25% better is pretty substantial

No point comparing 1080 graphs to 1080Ti graphs since the drivers have improved performance quite substantially in the meantime...the latest DX12 drivers compared to drivers back at 1080 launch have improved markedly http://wccftech.com/geforce-dx12-game-ready-drivers-quick-performance/
