SFF-8643, 8639 and M.2. are electrically compatible. Is that surprising?

I have a U.2 intel Nvme drive... but when I searched when I first got this board everyone said the M.2 which was for the Wifi / Bluetooth was not compatible..
& at the time there was no U.2 to m.2 converter
why would you get m.2 to 3.0 adapter when there is only 1 pcie 3.0 slot which is for the GPU
