I agree that external (USB) DAC/AMP is the way to go. JDS Labs Objective2+ODAC. FiiO Olympus 2-E10K.

No clutter inside chassis, no worries about lanes or other resources. Easily connected, disconnected, or moved from machine to machine if needed. Requires no drivers or game patches to generate maximum audio fidelity. "Just works" without effort (and sounds awesome) every time.

PC enthusiasts/gamers always limit options to Soundblaster or Xonar.
But don't be misled by the marketing (with meaningless specs) or by the audiophiles (with meaningless embellishments). Remember that PC soundcards were intended from the very beginning to be a working/cheap PC-integrated device which generates sound, even the most technically advanced premium soundcard today isn't going to be better than external audio equipment which has been around for decades.

Agree External Amps are superior as my pioneer sounds amazing for Movies, But as windows 10 is continuously having issues with SPDIF (Optic) I've found in some games the sound compressions aren't coded for Digital.
this makes some of the finer effects to be missed using optic alone, and therefore switching between Analogue or digital settings prior to Game launch allows for the best audio available.
Farcry 4 is an example of how some coding is **** adding the Creative Sound Blaster ZxR looks to tick boxes and thanks to good advice from here gave reason to strengthen options from the X99 platform.

    Update, 16/05/17
Confirmed thanks slot 1 sound card, Graphics card maintained x16.
The sound now even from edge browser is a improvement.
scrap dedicated mother board sound, the change back to sound card is like night and day, unless it's a driver issue, although updates have been slim.

What sound card are you using, X? I am thinking of a sound card as a possible upgrade too, although I am mostly happy with the SupremeFX DAC

    Installed this, **http://uk.creative.com/p/sound-blast...nd-blaster-zxr * *
I've disabled onboard sound in the Bios and removed all the old drivers.
Not sure if it's me but the computer looks to be working faster, one to note DTS is faulty on Win 10 at moment but is ok in preview builds.

Thanks for that. I studied that one online last week and it does look good. I couldn't tell how much of that was great advertising and fancy web graphics though, so thought I'd just mull it over for a while and revisit later after the hype wore off, lol.
