Preferred? That's personal choice. I always go for the best cooling I can afford. With the Skylake-X archtecture, the H115i just about manages to cope with an overclock that pulls 250W (stock TIM).

This will be really hard choice between Apex and Extreme.
i7-7820X and RVIE look as great choice, except if AMD somehow ruine price of i9-7900X.
Example 50% stronger CPU with 6 cores more can't be cheaper.

But discount of i7-6950X 10 cores with flux solder look good as well.
    i7-6950X + X99 similar number of PCI-E lanes as i7-7820X and X299.
Only X299 have stronger PCH and i7-6950X have more PCI-E lanes.

I told X99 have more sense than Z170, still is comparable in multi apps with newest Ryzens, only with different processors.
Same will be with X299. If someone buy 6-8 cores for 3 years could change on 10-12-16-18 depend how price go down.
First i7 and later i9 line, on same mobo, same memory...

No the 6950X has 40 lanes VS 28 on the 7820X so really its a downgrade of lanes for a higher price, really i would get the i9 or stick with X99, an AMD scale up of the AMD Ryzen 5 has been done VS the i9 and its not looking good for intel, there chips most likely will be slower.

I don't understand impatient people, I waited 2 months with CPU and Memory for motherboard I like, and believe me I would sorry later with any other model.
But you probably can afford replacement later when RVIE show up. Anyway I would wait little more if you have operative system with good performance.

    Good things take time

We all understand the impulse to buy on day 1, but you learn to hold back. This platform isn't exactly going to evaporate, it's here to stay.

People better wait, don't be early adopters.
This only confirm my advices to people waith ASUS ROG Series.
BAD NEWS if you ask me. Special for people who hurry up, it's hard to build perfect product available immediately free from bugs or problems.

My advice... Wait Rampage Series, they will be available when ASUS finish everything what they need to do.
They are first who want motherboards in stores, more than anyone from us, but there is reason why ROG series is still not ready.
Maybe completely different reasons but worth to wait and research little.

Motherboards will be in stores as they planned in August, same as X299 in August 2014.
But are completely shocked with Ryzen, Intel.
And decide to hurry up two months with launch date and most important boards are not finished.
Now this looks like to me as Hurry up, give them 1-2 options with motherboars only to buy i9 or just to wait and think on our specifications not on Ryzen and Thridreaper. If they hurry up maybe and thermal paste was results of 2 months earlier launch date.

I think you mite have been living under a rock when Intel pull forwards the release of X299 from August to June giving motherboard manufacturers no time to finish testing there board line ups, half of these boards out lack features thanks to Intel no thunderbolt thanks Intel for that.
