Changing subject some. Will that EK passive heat sink work on that dimm.2 card? *

A PCIE card for sata on a board like this would suck, it would be nice to use the U.2 port for this or now that I'll probably go with the 7900x the M.2 port:

I don't need raid, as I'll do software raid(a good controller costs too much and I only use this as data dump, it doesn't have to be super fast, while 8tb drives in raid 10 already get me ~400mb/s)

Are there any capacitors and the like that might interfere?

I just used the above pic for reference only. I was going to use a bigger passive heat sink via the PCH but subsequent information suggests I should use the dimm.2 card. There appear to be a few capacitors or the like very near the connecting port on the Asus card for the nvme ssd which prompted the question.

I don't think so but after looking at the board there is another problem, on one side is the ram, on the other the power connector... It might fit on the power connector side but I guess the solution would be more ugly than a pcie card in slot 4...

It's very sad there are no solutions for U.2, because then you could put the controller wherever you want and only have one cable visible.

Has anybody a different idea how to connect more sata drives to the board(only 6 sata ports srsly suck for such a board tbh).

(Edit: nevermind, the same plug is used by SAS which then supports sata, U.2 doesn't, so I need a converter. If anybody has an idea on that I'm all ears)

About how the wiring is done for the U.2, PCIEx4 and M.2 slots they couldn't give me a conclusive answer, but there seems to be a block diagram in the works...
You will need a HBA card (host bus adapter), which will then work with the mini SAS SFF-8087 to SATA cable.

This is a high quality entry level card I would recommend: https://www.supermicro.com/products/...SAS2LP-MV8.cfm

And one from Intel that I consider for myself if I use a R6E for my next build: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us...sp3wd080e.html

So at this point I am considering trying out the Apex and returning it if it doesn't live up to the Extreme..... Really ready to have my system back together

Thx, but as it is I'll probably go with a standard 4xSata3.0 extension card. Bit sad it had to come to this, but well, it's still the best board to go with...

Meanwhile, Asus already working on the next gen mobos:

So just an update from PB Tech.

They have assured me it's an R6E , not an Apex, & it has been shipped!*

Did PB Tech send you a photo of the box as you requested?

Did you get a tracking number or know the delivery date?

PB Tech STILL shows 5 boxes being available in their two Auckland superstores. So their R6E supply has only been decreased by one during the past four days, with the one being purchased by you, and so no one else in a city of 1.4 million people is interested in buying it. Very very weird...

    The plot thickens...
