"nothing more than a custom adapter" is oversimplifying things just a little
I exchanged a number of emails with that "Charixfox" several months ago after using six HD120s in a Corsair 570X build, and I was curious about duplicating his music-dancing RGB light show.
First of all, Corsair's HD120s are not Aura-compatible if you wanted to sync them and link them to Aura. The 4-1 pin ADD_HEADER on the R6E mobo works with WS2812b RGB LED strips, which are the LEDs used on the HD120. The problem is that you cannot control the HD120 RGBs from the mobo or from Aura. There is an Aura SDK, but Corsair provides no SDK for their Corsair Link, which would have given you low-level access to the HD120 RGB controller. So you can only either control the HD120 RGBs using Corsair Link or you have to do what Charixfox did and use a programmable Arduino AVR controller, and do your own wiring and soldering. Can you write C code to program the Arduino firmware yourself? Here are two links for the Arduino and a YouTube tutorial of wiring and programming the Arduino AVR:
https://www.arduino.cc/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZL-YNOH_jA
There is also an open-source AVR C library:
http://www.nongnu.org/avr-libc/user-manual/modules.html
Charixfox posted the Arduino firmware code that he used to program his HD120 demo here:
https://github.com/Charixfox/HD120-Controller
TL;DR: This is not plug-n-play
Many people have asked Charixfox to sell his Arduino setup as a prepackaged hardware and firmware bundle. But I think he knows that this is a high-maintenance project that will require tons of extra programming to have it even come remotely close to being plug-n-play without him being inundated with technical support questions. For example, if you want the lights to chase each other across different HD120 fans and rebound back, each of those effects have to be specifically programmed.
Adafruit refers to the WS2812 LEDs as "NeoPixels":
https://www.adafruit.com/category/168
and they offer their own Arduino NeoPixel library
https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_NeoPixel
and some very basic Arduino code samples:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-...rview?view=all
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-...parts?view=all
In my case, although I am proficient in C programming, I decided that the effort-to-reward ratio was too high, and I could think of many better ways to spend my time.Last edited by DragonPurr; 08-19-2017 at 12:19 AM.

We are AWC2R6E
(Another Week Closer To Rampage VI Extreme)
You can give your F5 key a two-day vacation because most retailers do not introduce a new mobo during the weekend ;-)Last edited by DragonPurr; 08-19-2017 at 12:28 AM.

I remember when it was another day closer, now it's another week closer. I think we'll be very lucky to see this board in Sept. It's looking more like mid Sept to Oct. at this rate.

5v, ground, and data are all that are needed to control an addressable WS2812b which is provided with the addressable header on the R6. I do not know to what extent the Aura software provides support for using this header, but a controlling a strip of WS2812b LEDs should be the same as a fan full of them.
This is assuming the LEDs do not have some propriatary controler sitting between them and the RGB connector.Last edited by adrian17050; 08-19-2017 at 03:15 AM.
