How should gaming performance on an x299 board with a 7820x compare with a z270/7700k?

Hi,

Ignoring the fact the platform is not out yet, it depends on your needs. For a pure gaming system, a 7700K is a good CPU still. We're now getting to a point where it becomes easier to pick scenarios where more cores equates to more performance than we were say 2 years ago. Some users need the additional IO, or if you're looking to stream or record video, having 6 to 8 cores will help also.

Cant speak for the X299 platform just yet but past performance has shown that when all else is equal, same graphics etc, for gaming faster clock cycles win out over more cores for gaming. Having 10 cores over 4 doesn't help if they aren't being used. Take something that is cpu intensive and will actually use all the cores and its a no brainier.

Depend of frequency of CPU. I advice you to invest in X299 or wait Z370.
Z370 will arrive in 2017 and Intel will present i7 with 6 core for mainstream.
He will offer highest fps in games of all processors. But if you want now than i7-7820X definitely.

X299 should support and Intel Optane Memory 32GB same as Z270.
X299 Chipset support 24 PCI-E lanes + 28/44 Processor.

Anyway you will not notice bottleneck or lower fps in games with any of these new processors.
X299 or Z270.I'm fan of X299.

I appreciate the replies. I'm going to go with a 1080ti for the GPU (in case that matters in context). I guess my main concern was whether or not single core performance would become a bottleneck on the 7820x vs a 7700k...at least on games that don't take advantage of multiple cores.

Wise decision, if it came down to x299 or a 1080Ti, then there's no contest.

7700k turbo 4.5GHZ, 7820K turbo 4.3, single core speed has an impact on lower resolution gaming, GPU has a much bigger impact on higher resolution gaming, my guess is you would not see a noticeable difference between the 2 systems using a GTX 1080ti

Z270 support Intel Optane Memory, 16 and 32GB.

What is with X299? Support or not.
And how many M.2 slots have Apex, 4?

I think I saw 2x ROG DIMM.2.
Extreme only have 1, but PCI-E slots could be used with adapter for extra M.2.

Only mad man could invest in Z270 now when X299 is here and Z370 almost finished. I hear in September.
New Coffe Lake is i7-7700K only with 6 cores. How someone could buy CPU with 4 cores if some games profit from 6, maybe even 8 I didn't look most CPU demanding games. How...? With Ryzen and Threadripper i7 4 core go in retirement. Well deserved retirment after 7 years of serving.
And multi threaded performance between i7-2600K and i7-7700K are not even 70-80%. I would like to someone estimate results are devastating I believe. For 6-7 years and more than 5 generation. It's time to easy say goodbay to Intel i7 4C/8T.
That not mean that i7-6700K and i7-7700K are bad, or mediocre EVEN I7-4790K, but for next build customers should turn to something newer.
OK they like Intel mainstream, small power consumption, Mini ITX motherboards, they used on that, OK.
Coffe Lake 6C/12T 95W unlocked for OC is almost here. It would be best trick if Intel solder him as Sandy Bridge, that would be real joke.

Well I guess I'm a mad man! LOL
Thing is when it comes to PCs no matter what you get it's outdone in less than 6 months. A real mad man is one that doesn't realize all of these processors have been in a working state for quite some time and if you wait for the next best thing you will be waiting forever. *You can bet that whatever is going to be released 2 years from now is already in the works. *I do intend on one more build in the fall on the X299 platform then I'll be waiting. Few years before I have another go. I'm already sitting on a Z170/6700K, Z270/7700K. Both built within 6 months of each other. *Honestly the only difference between these two builds is the 7700K was easier to get to 5GHz and topped out at 5.2 where 5GHz was the end of the line on the 6700K. I gained a little performance on the 7700K but not that much, less than 10% for sure.*

You are not mad, and I would upgrade constantly believe me without questions.
Only difference bettween Z170 and Z270 is really small, you should wait Z370 or X299 instead Z270.
But you always could sell platform and buy new one.
