Intel's leaning heavily on performance and efficiency refinements in microarchitecture and microcode. The materials and processes are much the same as those used in the previous few generations, with only gradual and minor improvements over time. The power budget and TDP targets remain the same. All they can do now - until the next revolutionary new breakthrough, whatever it will be - is attempt to do is push the thresholds of maximum active silicon on task while minimizing inert "dark" silicon off task.

Although I think Intel's TIM is one area that obviously needs real improvement. Pretty sad that serious overclockers immediately consider de-lidding CPUs that should (if properly made) offer maximum performances when left intact.

New heatsink with fins is cool, If that help excellent.
I only afraid that will need redesigne of whole power section on every motherboard on market.
I hope that will not be necessary.
Rampage VI Apex is so cool motherboard. ROG line need such innovation.
    Reall overclocking board.
I would keep CPU on 4.5GHz, and because of that for me is enough and Rampage VI Extreme.

I can just imagine the Apex selling out real fast and not enough stock for demand due to the VRM issue

New heatsinks which correct the issue?

What about all the existing X299 mobos which have "old" heatsinks?
    Product replacement/RMA?
    Heatsink upgrade kits?

For such premium and expensive processors as i7-7820X or i9-7900X I would never go with something below Apex.
Apex or Extreme. Special now when power consumption is increased even more compare to previous Intel Xtreme processors.

I am going with the Rampage VI Extreme regardless for my new build.

However, I wanted to point out that all the pictures of the R6E show that it does not have an 8+8 VRM, but an 8+4 VRM plugs.

Not sure if this is going to make a huge difference or not. Unless the boards shown at Computex were not accurate.

From what I have seen/heard 8+4 should be just fine for the extreme in terms of power. I believe de8auer even mentions it in one of his videos.

Glad to hear it. I really don't plan on pushing the whole 7900x to 5GHz. Just identifying the two Turbo Boost Max 3.0 cores and boosting them to 5GHz and leaving the rest to run at stock.

Single thread performance only needs a couple of cores. Not 10.
