Maximus VIII Extreme & Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080Ti Incompatible. (Cannot Detect GPU)

As the last thread regarding this issue was marked as solved - I wanted to start a new thread regarding this.

The video card is not detected by the motherboard (Doesn't display in GPU List in BIOS -PCIE Slot shows as Empty) - No video output.

A thread exists on these forums that was closed with the solution being swap to a different brand of card - I don't think this is an acceptable solution.

Here are atleast 5 other examples of users experiencing the same issue.

If anyone owns this particular combo and it is working - please post - it's quite a rare Motherboard/GPU combo so it's unsurprising there are so few reports of issues online - I know i wasted a huge amount of time troubleshooting before replacing with evga cards.

Hi FreshCakes2000

With it not being detected in the bios it either isn't getting power from the pcie cables or it died.

That is not the case - did you read any of the links provided?

Each one of them states the GPU works fine in any other system, please read the links thoroughly - it's extremely frustrating to be offered such 101 advice after the enormous amount of time wasted troubleshooting this.
I didn't say the lights aren't coming on - the lights came on in my example - just because the BIOS doesn't detect it - doesn't automatically place fault on the GPU.

That is a unique situation to encounter and diagnose, any 1080 Ti should be compatible with the Maximus VIII Extreme so this sounds like a flaw somewhere with the Aorus since all is well with EVGA 1080 Ti's.

Hi, I'm the guy from the reddit thread OP linked. The same could be said for the motherboard, since the card is working perfectly fine in my Asus STRIX Z270G.
Nothing is stopping Gigabyte from saying: "Any motherboard should be compatible with the Aorus 1080 Ti since all is well with other motherboards"

My z270 Prime A does not recognize my Aorus 1080Ti as well.

I get visuals when using it, but the BIOS displays no VGA cards connected to the PCIe slots (although it does recognize that it's outputting through the PEG).

As a result the only possible link speed is x2 instead of x16.

Here are some BIOS pictures (taken while the monitor is connected to the displayport of the 1080Ti).

Seems like Asus and Gigabyte do not play nice together?

Logic tells me that would be corporate suicide if it was done intentionally 😕
So I find this a little hard to digest.
no siggy, saw stuff that made me sad.

Interesting, that's similar but slightly different to the issue experienced on the Maximus VIII board, the difference being you're seeing video output from the Gigabyte GPU - The BIOS shows the slots empty the same as you've shown in the pictures - but to see the bios i had to run a second GPU in the system or use the onboard GPU.

yeah I agree, I'm not sure why the Aorus 1080 Ti would have problems in an ASUS board. Seeing how the Aurus works in another motherboard the only thing I could see causing it is maybe Gigabyte's vbios has compatibility issues with ASUS's UEFI.

After re-seating my card it was properly recognized and is now operating in full speed.

I don't know about the Maximus VIII Extreme, but my Prime A works fine with the Aorus 1080Ti.
