CPU Core Temp. reached 95°C overclocking Intel i4790k to 4500MHz, is this okay?

Boosted CPU to 4500MHz and core voltage was 1.250v. Core Temp. got to max 95°C, when I started stress test prima95 + in-game Rocket League + streamed to twitch + opened a lot of apps (OBS, Streamlabs, Steam, Temp apps) + 5-6 pages in browser. (CPU usage was %100, game kept crashing every 2-3 minute)

This is my rig:

Asus ROG Swift PG278Q 27 inch Monitor (2560x1440)
Samsung U28E590D 28-Inch 4K LED Monitor (3840 x 2160) running @2560x1440
Intel Core i7-4790K CPU (Quad Core 4GHz, Socket H3 LGA-1150)
Asus STRIX-GTX980-256 Bit Nvidia Gtx 980 Graphics Card (OC'ed to 1.495MHz @Memory clock 7410- Voltage 1175- GPU Temp very stable and low)
MAXIMUS VII FORMULA Z97 Motherboard
Corsair Vengeance Pro Series 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 2133Mhz CL11 XMP Performance Desktop Memory Kit
Corsair AX860i 860W 80 Plus Platinum Power Supply Unit
Corsair Obsidian Series 450D Windowed Mid-Tower ATX High Airflow Performance Computer Case
SanDisk SSD PLUS Sata III 2.5-inch Internal SSD 120 GB
SanDisk Extreme PRO SSD Sata III 2.5-inch Internal 480 GB
SEAGATE NAS HDD Internal Hard Drive 5900 RPM SATA III NAS Support 3 TB
Corsair Hydro Series H100i All-In-One 240mm Digital High Performance Rad Liquid Cooler for CPU
1x Corsair Air Series AF140-LED 140mm Quiet Edition High Airflow LED Fan
4x Corsair Air Series AF120-LED 120mm Quiet Edition High Airflow LED Fan
NZXT 2m LED Cable 10 volts
Asus DVD-RW Bulk Drive
Windows 10 64Bit

I had to pull it down to 4400MHz and lower voltage to 1.200 to stabilize. Now when I ran the stress test + everything at these values, i got max 87°C.

Without stress test, temperature is much lower around 70°C or so. I wanna make it 4500MHz, would it be okay to go with it?

and one more question, is my PSU low for this rig? if i added a second GPU, would it carry on?

Hmmmmmm. Seems high considering it's on water.

What are your idle temps? What is the ambient temperature in the room where the PC is? Your CPU cooling faulty in anyway? What are you monitoring temps with? Are you running Prime while playing games and doing all sorts of other tasks?????

I have no experience with the 4790K but on air, with a Lucifer V2 my 6700K never reached temperatures that high in Prime95. 100C is the throttle temp for the 4790K if I'm not mistaken but you don't want your temps that high all the time.

Use one of these to determine what you need in terms of PSU wattage:

Hello panzlock

thank you very much for response!

idle temps are 35-36°C. room temperature is about 20°C

honestly have no idea about cpu cooler, i built the rig about 2 years ago myself and since then all i did was cleaning the dust off regularly. should maybe change the water and apply new thermal paste?

monitoring the temps with core temp 1.9

I was running prime while playing games and doing all sorts of other tasks

100C is the throttle temp for the 4790K and it has seen 95°C only once however during max cpu usage it kept going between 75-80°C and 87-90°C so can't say it was very stable.

so the question is, should i go back up to 4500MHz and see how it goes or do something else?

Hi Bal

Prime95 is a cpu torture test and with a game running on top of it I'm sure your cpu is crying for help. 🙂

Try running just the Realbench benchmark and see what temps are, this will give you a more accurate temp to go off of.

How are temps when just running the Realbench benchmark ?

Yeah that looks much better, you can try for 4.6GHz if you like, temps say you can.

To me what counts the most is gaming temps and for the 4790k gaming temps at 75c is the highest you want to see.

Hello Bal,

It seems like your water cooling heat sink is out of thermal paste or dry up, so the temperature will shoot up quickly during load. You can also download latest Corsair software and set up to performance mode for the Corsair fans to cool down your cpu. I sometimes force it to run 100% fan speed.
Sincerely,
Legolas

Hi Legolas

thanks for answers guys

well ive been gaming now and got concerns... temperatures are very good and in csgo i got about 260-290 fps and that is insane good. but ive been crashing in Dead by daylight, rocket leage is giving error on start up and in csgo i get lag spikes time to time, i have problems.... but why? my temps are so good! it didnt go over 70C
