That's fantastic work you've done there Bran and very well presented. I really appreciate the time and effort you've put in fella and I'm sure others will too.
But I have to say the results are disappointing from the eGPU. It's a shame. But to be fair the GTX 1060 in your laptop is decent anyway. I would probably see more benefit with my G752VT as it has the weaker GTX970m fitted. Thanks again.

Indeed, they are disappointing compared to the 1060. :P I ran the synthetics first, and was pretty impressed. That changed when I started running games. It seems to trade blows with the built in 1060 in most games. A little worse in some, a little better in others.

I suppose this article could have told us that much however:

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/Razer-....213526.0.html

Would be a pretty compelling pairing for one of those upcoming coffee lake ultrabooks with 4c/8t, but if you have a decent dGPU in your laptop it probably isn't worth it.

Edit: Oddly enough some games really seem to get a boost and others take a hit. I need to find a decent way to benchmark it to confirm, but I can't help but feel like it is running PUBG significantly better than the built in 1060. Though this could be because my CPU is staying way cooler and not thermal throttling. :P Requires further testing. lol

some of those test results are weird, particularly the resident evil one.

The other results are inline with what I expected.

a 4x pcie Thunderbolt would have a 20% penalty vs. desktop.

a 2x pcie Thunderbolt would have an extra 10% penalty on top of that.

That seems to agree with your 3dmark and unigine results.

Now, those games where the 1070 egpu was actually slower than the built-in 1060..... could actually be due to lack of bandwidth from 2x pcie? who knows....

    1080ti should be 100% faster than 1060,
but 1080ti egpu is only ~50% faster than 1060.

Possibly. Though I'm thinking it has more to do with CPU/TB protocol overhead rather than a pcie bandwidth limitation? Apparently a lot of the Dell and Lenovo TB3 implantations are a 2x connection, and they benchmark within spitting distance of the 4xs even with 1080ti's (assuming of course that they output to an external display).

But like you say, who knows. lol

Some of the weird scores could have to do with Asus's thunderbolt firmware being significantly out of date. Apparently some of the newer TB firmware updates have helped others quite a bit.

I think it just demonstrates the inconsistencies of using an eGPU. It's a shame Asus can't lend you an XG Station 2 for comparison.
I also wonder if it can be driver conflicts between dGPU and eGPU and whether a laptop with a fast CPU and only integrated Intel graphics would perform better.
When I say better I mean better than what you achieved as the performance will obviously be better than integrated Intel graphics.

Yeah their product support (and quality) seems to have gone downhill as of late. At least in the sub $1500 dollar category anyway.

I'm going to rerun a few of the benchmarks at 1440p just for ****s and giggles. If the results are any sort of interesting I will be sure to pop in and share them!

I only retested the Witcher 3 and Battlefront because they are the most akin to real gameplay. Retested at the same settings as before only this time at 2560x1440. These numbers are straight outta fraps benchmark logs:

    Laptop 1060 - Witcher 3 (1440p)
    Frames: 3472 - Time: 109406ms - Avg: 31.735 - Min: 26 - Max: 37

    eGPU 1070 - Witcher 3 (1440p)
    Frames: 3445 - Time: 106469ms - Avg: 32.357 - Min: 27 - Max: 37

    Desktop 1070 - Witcher 3 (1440p)
    Frames: 5510 - Time: 103719ms - Avg: 53.124 - Min: 45 - Max: 60

    Laptop 1060 - Battlefront (1440p)
    Frames: 5011 - Time: 80750ms - Avg: 62.056 - Min: 53 - Max: 74

    eGPU 1070 - Battlefront (1440p)
    Frames: 5053 - Time: 81141ms - Avg: 62.274 - Min: 55 - Max: 76

    Desktop 1070 - Battlefront (1440p)
    Frames: 7745 - Time: 79328ms - Avg: 97.633 - Min: 88 - Max: 116

Those numbers are basically within what I would call 'margin of error'. The gap between eGPU and laptop dGPU closed, but now you have a $400 dollar GPU score the same as a $200 dollar one, rather than losing to it. lol

Still kind of disappointing, but interesting none the less.

so basically, wait 5 years to buy a fast GPU for double performance.

Maybe the gtx1460 will be fast enough to double performance by that time.
