I'm about 10 hours into benchmarking the desktop and laptop configurations, and am to lazy to redo them with new parameters at this point. :P

The main goal wasn't to provide an apples to apples comparison anyway, but rather to determine what type of TB3 implementation is in these laptops. The secondary goal is to provide real world results for what type of performance the user could expect by adopting this type of setup (assuming it works at all).

After this initial round of benchmarks I might dive a little deeper into things like thermals, or trying to get a more apples to apples Desktop vs eGPU comparison. But those will be tests for another day. :P Mainly because like I say I'm already pretty deep into benchmarking 2 of the 3 configurations.

I will try and add some of those other benchmarks you mentioned to the testing slate though. And like I say, in the coming weeks we can dive deeper into other aspects of it all.

To be honest the way you are already testing is the better way.

For our purposes I agree. Wouldn't do any harm to test a few other ways in the future though. :P It's always interesting to tinker and test.

EDIT: Also link626 I just finished the Resident Evil 6 benchmark. If time permits, I will do the UE4 and Final Fantasy benchmarks as well. Though between work and amazons fast shipping (it's scheduled to arrive tomorrow) I might not get to them in this first round of benchmarks.

Thanks for doing this Brian187! We will finally understand if it's a TB3 20Gpbs or 40.

I wanted to ask you if you could do some testing with the internal monitor and an external one after, to see if there's any performance difference. I read on the Rog XG Station 2 that "if your notebook supports NVIDIA® G-SYNC™ technology , an external display being connected to ROG XG station 2 is required to utilize the graphics card in ROG XG Station 2", but I don't know if that applies to other products too. If that applies to every product it would be terrible for those like me who don't own an external monitor.

Will you also test the gtx 1070 desktop vs the 1070 egpu connected to the GL502VMK?

I'll try the internal monitor to see if it works, but won't do in depth testing until my initial run off benchmarks is over. My initial benchmarks will just be on an external display.

As for testing the desktop 1070 vs the eGPU 1070, that is the current plan. (As well as vs the Laptops built in 1060 just for comparisons sake.)

It just got delivered, but I won't get home from work for another 7 hours or so. So I'll start testing later tonight!

Edit: To clarify, that doesn't mean I won't do the testing comparing internal to external displays, but rather that it might take me a few more days before I get around to said testing.

Alright so I'm home, and after a few minutes of tinkering it is definitely working (though at first it was really confusing trying to tell if it was). I'm off to start benchmarking!

    WIsh me luck!

Edit: Also so far the internal display is not working. It might just be that I haven't figured it out yet (or it could be like you said that it doesn't work if the laptop has a GSync panel). I'll look into this further after I finish with the benchmarks.

I don't think it will work with the internal gsync display. The official ROG XG Station 2 support site says "
*if your notebook supports NVIDIA® G-SYNC™ technology , an external display being connected to ROG XG station 2 is required to utilize the graphics card in ROG XG Station 2."

The first batch of benchmarks is down below! If you have any questions, let me know!

All testing was done with the GL502VMK returned to completely stock settings (no undervolting or disabling of turbo boost) and on an external display. As far as I can tell (and as others have pointed out) I don't think you can use the internal display with this particular setup because the laptop I am using has a GSync display, so I don't have any numbers for using the internal display.

For this testing we have three systems:

    Desktop:
    i7 4790 (non k)
    GTX 1070
    16GB DDR3

    GL502VMK:
    i7 7700HQ
    GTX 1060 3GB
    12GB DDR3

    eGPU + GL502VMIK:
    i7 7700HQ
GTX 1070 via Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Box
    12GB DDR3

Edit: There is a typo here, the middle score is the eGPU even though it is also labeled desktop. Sorry for the typo.

It would only let me post 15 pictures at once so here are the settings that were used for each benchmark. Firestrike doesn't have settings (as far as I can tell) so it was just run at whatever it defaults to. Also it should be noted that each test was run three times, the results picked for the benchmarks were the best of the three for each run. Metro 2033 is the exception because it by default ran three times and gave an average for all runs.

Just realized I forgot to post pictures of the box itself. It's a lot better looking (and bigger) than you would expect from the product pictures online. Also sorry for the quality. Poor lighting plus crappy phone camera. It's the best I've got at the moment.
