I've been reading over all the manuals and it seems that when using a 28 lane Skylake-X CPU there is no ASUS X299 board that allows an 8x/8x/8x configuration with the PCIe slots. Every other manufacturer allows this config with their boards. This is a major disappointment if true. According to the ASUS manuals you can only have a 16x/8x/1x config with a 28 lane CPU. Basically meaning you HAVE TO have a 44 lane (7900x and up) CPU just to be able to plug in 3 PCIe cards in the board. This kinda means that 28 lane CPUs aren't are useful as they are on other brands boards and are pretty much stuck with 2 PCIe slots just like a 16 lane CPU.

Can someone from ASUS verify that this is the case? Can I really not use 3 PCIe slots @ 8x/8x/8x on any of your X299 boards? I really want to buy an ASUS board along with a 7820x but want to use 3 PCIe slots.

I did just take a look at the Rampage VI Extreme specs page that was recently posted (here: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/ROG-RAMPAGE-VI-EXTREME/specifications/)

And according to this page it does look like the Rampage VI Extreme will support x8/x8/x8 with a 28 lane CPU. Unless they have it wrong on the specs page.

4 x PCIe 3.0 x16 (x16, x16/x16, x16/x0/x16/x8, or x16/x8/x8/x8 mode with 44-LANE CPU; x16, x16/x8 orx8/x8/x8 mode with 28-LANE CPU) *

* The PCIE_X8_4 slot shares bandwidth with M.2_2(DIMM.2)

Very interesting indeed. Although if I'm going to shell out for the RVIE I might as well get a 7900x to go with it. It would be a bit more useful on the TUF Mark 1 or Strix, or Prime.

Limiting yourself in that way leaves no room for expansion. Hindsight, use it 😉

WTF are you talking about? Limiting myself? It's a valid question and observation about ASUS X299 boards. And telling me to use hindsight ? I haven't bought anything yet you ahole. You really added a lot to this thread .
