CPU socket clamping lever won't move into place?

    Motherboard: Strix z270e

Whenever I try to place a CPU (i7-7700k) into the socket (with the little plastic "CPU installation tool" that comes with the motherboard), when pulling down the socket lever about 90% of the way the entire CPU mounting bracket sort of "jumps"/"pops" upwards (too much tension/pressure on the mechanism?).

Even more perplexing to me is that nothing seems to be visually broken o_o, and that it had worked OK on previous occasions. RMA time?

Are there any bent pins? Or bits of plastic or other debris which prevent properly flush/secure mounting?

No bent pins (as far as I can tell... unless ALL the pins were bent, since they are facing in the same direction, for in each section).

No (visible) debris/bits of plastic within the socket.

The CPU itself doesn't seem to be warped/bent (since the edges of the IHS is sitting snugly on all 4 sides, and the PCB itself is also sitting snugly within the Rockit 88 Delid tool).

At least the repair centre is really close to work (and has walk-in service) >_>.
