6700k OC on Hero Alpha - 4.6 @ 1.34v crash during heavy multitasking bench

I've been reading a lot on OCing and have learned a lot so far. EDIT: title of thread should have been adjusted, correct information below 🙂

Stock 6700k was turbo boosted to 4.2GHz and I'd see it jump up to a 1.42V which wasn't needed, and caused higher temps. System Score on Realbench was 109,182. This is using all default settings in BIOS. Stress test LuxMark crashes, test keeps going. Did a DDU reinstall of video drivers, luxmark still crashes.

I put my first OC at 4.5GHz at 1.35v, kept LLC on Auto, and passed all RealBench tests/stress test, and had lower temps from stock, but for some reason my score dropped down to a 107,599.. Luxmark still crashes on this stress test too.

Then went and did 4.6GHz at 1.34v, LLC auto, tried 3, and during the benchmark multitasking stage, windows crashes.

Then I changed LLC to 5 and it passed the multitasking stage. System Score then was a 110,153. Passes stress test. LuxMark also crashes in this.

Max temps I saw for both 4.5 and 4.6 were around 62-70.

With the latest settings and the 4.5GHz settings, HWMonitor and CPUZ VCore shows 1.344V, and the VID bounces around above 1.344 and below. I tried windows performance power plan to see if it'd be more stable but wasn't. I changed back to balanced. How can I see the vid more stable? Is it necessary in my case? Why does the vcore show the 1.344 value at all times?

So from stock to 4.5 my score goes lower than stock, but 4.6 makes it only a little better than stock? Can someone explain? What am I missing?

What's the next step? Should I try 1.35v and put LLC back on Auto? End game is to find the sweet spot for 4.6GHz and switch to adaptive.

I can do 4.6GHz with only 1.295v and LLC at 5.

At 4.6GHz, try 1.40v and just run the RealBench benchmark, not the stress test. If it you make it to the end, lower it to 1.39v and try again.
Keep lowering it until RealBench or Windows crashes, then bump the Vcore up .05v and you should be good to go.

Best I can get for 4.6GHz is 1.33v with an LLC of 5. Passes benchmark and stresstest. Is there anything else I can adjust to achieve a lower voltage? How can I keep the VID more stable?

As far as I know, you can't control the VID. It's the voltage that the CPU requests from the board but doesn't necessarily receive.

I would not be concerned with the VID. 1.33v for 4.6GHz is a good overclock with minimal voltage.

I switched to adaptive and put it at 1.335v and all runs fine. Temps much lower too! Idle clocks down like it's supposed to. If anyone else has any other suggestions please chime in, otherwise I guess I'll stick with this.

For my 6600k @ 4.6 I use 1.425 Adaptaptive (1.450 in HWInfo), LLC 4, CPU Current capability 130% and Power Phases set to Extreme.
1.450 is the total max safe for Skylake on air cooling, I use a Noctua DH-14.

Your VCCIO matters also and should be need no more than 1.20v for that overclock.
I would take the other voltages off Auto as well.
VCCSA 1.175 for Ram speeds 3200 and under.
PCH 1.15v
CPU Standby 1.0v

Using LLC 4 will keep the actual load voltage reported in Windows close to the voltage set in the BIOS.

Ignore VID voltage it means nothing, all you should look at is the actual voltage.

I use Prime95 29.2 Blend Test to test for stability as it's the most difficult stress test to pass and should give total stability peace of mind on your overclock ( why it requires 1.425v BIOS), don't let your temps go above 85c.

Your 6700k could see 4.7-4.8Ghz at the voltage settings above if you can keep it below 85c and be 24/7 stable.
