    R6E: All the “weird” M2 stuff ??

Hi! Sorry if this has been covered (on my cell phone)

Going from an R5EV10 to a R6E soon. What’s the deal with the weird M2 capability ??*

I run an Samsung SM 961 1TB (the odd OEM version not the consumer ready one they came out with later) as my boot drive. Can I add in a second one of these and make a 2TB bootable RAID0 without cluttering up the visuals with an optional add in board?

What’s the boot / non boot capability of the odd / high end M2 options on the R6E? And is any of the required add in boards included in the box ?

    Thx!*

I own a couple sm961s so I know what you are talking about. Short answer you will be able to run one of them as a boot drive. According to Intel, you will NOT be able to run them in RAID 0 as a bootable drive off the CPU lanes. You could do it using the PCH lanes but then you are limited to the DMI bandwidth. In other words you wouldn't get much benefit running them in RAID 0 using the PCH lanes as the SM961 pretty much already saturates the DMI bandwidth.

If you are looking to run them as a non-boot drive, then yes you can use the DIMM.2, the m.2 slot or another card in a PCI-e late and create a RAID 0 array. The DIMM.2 and the M.2 slot are already included with the R6E and you won't need any new hardware. As a non-boot drive, the RAID 0 should scale properly using the CPU lanes.

    Thx for the info!

I’ll just stick with a single 961 as the boot drive then (to confirm, a single one in the integrated mobo m2 slot should be bootable correct?)

I run 2 x 850 EVOs in RAID0 as my Steam drive and this has been more than fast enough with loading games *
