Hi, I'm new to this forum. I'm looking for a gaming laptop and I'm really stressed out about it. I can get a good deal on a refurbished G752-RH71 but I was told that the graphics card is soldered onto the motherboard. Is that something I should be worried should it start failing or is there any way you can upgrade them? I plan on keeping it for a long time So I don't want to buy something that I'll regret later on.

Looks like that may have a 970M?

A lot of the ROG notebooks have soldered GPU's, this is because they are rarely swapped out due to their price and its cost effective for Asus to use All In One mobo's. A lot of the time an updated graphics card will have different heat/power requirements one generation to the next. Its hard to adjust internal heat/power dynamics in a laptop because of the limited space. Not to mention Laptop GPU cards are extremely expensive. as well.

I wouldnt worry about failure too much as long as its a properly cared for laptop. I would hope the deal is an extremely good one though, as the 970m is already a generation behind and is a couple of years old. I have the 980m and I myself am looking at upgrading soon. Good Luck.

EDIT: I would also say Asus has some of the best laptop cooling tech around. IMO anyway, compared to others like MSI/Gigabyte/ect.

(ROG has simply become too expensive compared to the competition with same specs... 😞 )

I wouldn't say that Asus has the best cooling. Au contraire, they overheat alot, and specifically the model you are looking to buy refurbished has a lot of problems. It's a g752v something version. I have G752vy and have a lot of heating problems. I would advise you towards Clevo laptops or Clevo rebrand, Lenovo Y720 (Y520 has bad thermal management) or even Acer Nitro Black Edition (the latter 2 also have Thunderbolt 3 if you decide you want an external GPU in the future instead of buying a whole new laptop). All of these have 1060 6GB inside, are easily serviceable ( you just pop out the bottom cover and you can repaste easily if needed, add SSD, HDD or RAM) and have good prices, around 1100-1300$.

Sorry yours overheats. You seem to be in the minority. Most of these laptops are in the 70c range at load (G752VY that is), which is not bad considering what they are cooling and that other similar laptops can reach 90c+ As long as you dont obstruct the air flow and the heat sinks are clear of dust/other debris, temps in the 70's should be obtainable. If not, I would look at possibly a repaste of the heat sinks because something isn't right.

Not sure how much this can help, but check the thread below and consider sending it back for service if you're interested especially if you are still under warranty.

Well I bought a G752VS and since now I am happy with it. The most thing I like is the cooling concept.*

Sorry, I didn't notice that there were any more replies. Does anyone know anything about the gl702vs? Does it also have a soldered graphics card? I can get a open box from best buy for $1192 USD. That one has a gtx 1070 8gb.

gl702vs is from the strix line, which is a more mainstream laptop thats a little thinner and less beefy. With a 1070 though, that shouldnt have any trouble getting around. 1192 is a nice price for that caliber laptop. Still has dual fans so I would say go for it.
