    Familia pocos

Well after some thought and given the Christmas spirit I went ahead and ordered the VROC key from Mouser - 27 Euros shipped.

I really don't know how useful it will be for me but in any case it is much cheaper than a good hardware raid controller and since the stock is disappearing I thought better safe than sorry...

But rest assured that now that *I* got it - Asus will go ahead and give it to all Rampage users for free....lol

I wish everybody here a Merry Christmas.

You are probably right on this. I mainly got it for future proofing. You never know when suddenly Intel has new M.2 drives that work like their 700ps or suddenly a year or so, Intel allows non-intel drives to be used. It is a nice to have, the i bet I'll never use it. Remember tho this is the same key they wanted to charge $99 for.

I also read about the $99 so it is really cheap to skip. And I do hope that Intel will come out with new cheaper / faster SSDs or that the 900 series drop in price.

We'll see this motherboard has more coming down the road in terms of improvements / features it seems. Let's see how Asus handles all this.

    Hi all,

Just like another member on this thread, I have a Hyper x16 with 4x Intel 900p optane drives, wanting to use VROC to create a bootable RAID 0. I also bought a INTEL Only VROC key from Mouser as suggested by others here.

The conclusion from various testings, using different stripe sizes and between RAID 0 /RAID 5, is that we cannot get a decent 4k r/w performance out of the RAID if we use VROC. The 4k (QD1) r/w performance drops to about 40MB/s from over 200MB/s using a single drive. On the other hand, if you switch VROC to passthrough and use Windows' own software RAID (non bootable obviously), the 4k performance goes back to the normal 200MB/s+ range.

I can only conclude that the Intel RSTe driver is not working properly. It's a real shame that intel pushes out this product without testing this properly. The whole Hyper x16 and 4x 900p costs US$1600. This is such a joke.

I am still hoping this is just a driver issue. So perhaps an adventurous soul may install Linux on this and try the Intel Linux RSTe driver, which may / may not post better results.

    Michael

Hmm interesting... The whole point with the Intel Drives is 4K performance and this definitely does not sound right for what they cost.

We should wait and see if it is indeed a driver issue and whether Intel will allow other SSSDs to work with VROC in the future in hope of better cost/performance ratio.

With that said the VROC key is out of stock end EOL in Mouser right now so this is it. It does not seem it will be back in stock so I am glad I snatched one for future testing.

Can you point to those conclusions? Ive not seen that anywhere. Ive run 900Ps in both configurations and got the same results. Its normal for any drive to take a hit in 4K performance when using raid0 due to the latency of that configuration. Im hitting 195MB/s in raid0 4K read and 297MB/s as a single. The 195 is still far faster than what you get from 960 pros in raid0, down around 35MB/s when it will do about 55MB/s as a single drive. Its all the latency of raid0.

I have seen Bright tail get better results with software over the VROC trial mode with Sammy drives but Im thinking that is more to do with the fact that this platform is meany for intel drives only.

I think if the conclusion is that RAID 0 should, by definition, be slower than single drive for 4K, then I wonder why the same set of drives, when raided under windows’ own disk management utility, does not suffer the same? That’s why I concluded the culprit lies with intel’s RSTe driver / software.

If you look at the 900p VROC RAID tests performed by both Tomshardware and PCPer, they both suffered the same. They both tested using VROC RAID rather than windows software RAID.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but after looking around I didn't find anything, hope you can shed some light on it:

How to configure the bios/ where to place the NVMe on the Apex to get the best performance?

I have one 960 Pro 1TB connected to the right side of the right Dimm.2 slot on the Apex (closest to the 24pin power connector) and I have roughly 3000mb/s read. For the life of me I can't get to 3500mb/s.

When I tested this with a non-bootable drive, I did see a degradation in 4k use, but NOTHING like you are describing. Like Justin I went from like 350Mb/s to 289ish but nothing like 40.
