Is it possible to setup a RAID 0 of two Samsung 960 evo NVME drives on the DIMM.2? Or is this not possible because we need VROC? I'm confused.

Sorry for the maybe dump question, but why is the key obsolete. Has Intel changed their policy or is VROC just EOL. I am still running my EVOs in software raid as simple passthrough on my Hyper M.2 x16.
Would love the ability to run this RAID0 via VROC or even a RAID5, don't need the possibility to boot from those drives. But I never really knew which key to get or where to get it here in Germany.
And in the end, the software raid numbers were much better than what VROC showed at the time of testing.

Simple answer, No you can't set up RAID 0 if you want it to be a bootable drive. If you are just using it for a non-bootable drive, yes you can. Forget VROC.
As for why is it obsolete. It is only useful if you are going to use RAiD 1, 5, 10. RAID 0 can be done for bootable drives with some Intel drives. I'm not sure who would create a bootable drive using RAID 1. To get RAID 5 or 10, you need 3 & 4 intel drives respectively, which is doable using ALL your PCI-e slots and a u.2, but once again, who is making a RAID 5, 10 bootable drive?
So in this ONE instance of making a bootable RAID 1,5,10 while using INTEL drives only, then the key is useful on the x299 platform. If you have any other brand of drives or want to do anything else, it either won't work or you don't need a key.Last edited by Brighttail; 01-15-2018 at 03:05 PM.

Thanks a lot. But if I want to do a RAID0 with non Intel drives and I am still keen on using VROC, I would need a key or without would only run some kind of trial or?
As stated, I don't want to boot. I am booting from another drive, my Hyper M.2 is just for data and work files.

Had the idea, that VROC may be less error prone in case of power loss and such scenarios. Will stick with my software raid than
Thanks a lot.
For me the question is, why would I boot from such a fast storage system, boot time is over after like 30 seconds and happens once a day under normal scenarios, program loading is also not much and if it's done it's doneBut doing video editing and so on, I am happy to get my data as fast as possible.

Sometime far into the future when it's time to retire my Rampage VI Extreme and turn it to a storage "whatever - device", and at the same time Intel has released large, fast and cheap Optane drives that MIGHT work with the VROC key I purchased from Mouser the key might come in handy.
Till then, I officially declare this thing a bad joke and Intel a disappointment in general since after several years that I have been out of the hardware loop, all I can see is an unprecedented mess of a market and what I knew as rock solid and quality assured (Intel, Asus and several others) has turned to a beta testing festivity that has nothing to do with what I had in mind when I decided to build a new PC.
I got the key just because I have spent several thousands of Euros for this work machine and $30 dollars is simply not much. Other than that should I require a lot and fast storage I am going to build a NAS with Thunderbolt or 10GBE based on a Supermicro + Small onboard XEON using ZFS or Unraid or similar.

Good luck with fast/cheap Optane drives. I saw a pre-order for the 120Gb one and it was $378 CAD!!
