Which chipset / processor for gaming?

dared
Level 7
Hi,

I am looking to build a new machine in the near future so looking for some advice on the chipset/processor to go for. It will be a water cooled gaming machine and budget will be around £1k. No monitor yet (not included in the £1k) so also open to suggestions there.

From what I have read an I5 should be ok for gaming but is there any advantage to push to an I7?

Personally Id go for the I7 to get hyper threading. Price difference is about $100USD if you go with an unlocked version.
Its also dependent on what games and if they use all the cores or not.

Thanks for the advice so far, so will probably look at the following:

Maximus X Hero
I7-8700k
Memory - Recommendations?
Samsung SSD 500GB
2 x 1TB HDD
Intel Optane - worth it?
1080 Graphics - Recommendations?

All will be water cooled
