I have never used the BIOS Flashback. I have always downloaded the BIOS and then unzipped and renamed it in a fresh empty folder on my C drive. Then I boot into the current BIOS and update from within the EZ Flash utility by pointing to the folder with the new BIOS. Then I select the new BIOS and let the update process take over.

IMO by far the best way to update the BIOS is with a USB stick containing the BIOS file named "R5E.CAP" plugged into the "ROG Connect" USB port in back with the PC turned off, as detailed on page 2-14 of the manual. You can actually use this method without any CPU installed on the motherboard. That method is called "USB BIOS Flashback" by the manual, which is extremely confusing because that is the exact same name as the procedure listed on page 4-21, which is done with the PC turned on via AI Suite and is an entirely different (and IMO much more dangerous) method.

When you're saying "don't use Flashback method", you might want to be specific as to which one you're referring to. Probably the easiest way to do so is to just identify whether your PC was actually powered on when you used it.

Just checked, and I can't tell which version of "Flashback" anyone in this thread was referring to. Report whether you were using "ROG Connect" or "AI Suite" version. I'm betting you were referring to the AI Suite version, yes? Or is there a third Flashback method out there?

Samukas I think your CPU died from the update...not sure if the CPU still under warranty, will have to check, if not will ASUS replace it?!? Not very happy about this...please advise...

    Thanks!*
Monday the Cpu will be delivered to the store to go to Intel.
Let's see what Intel has to say about it.

    Hi Everyone,
I just talked to a colleague of a friend of mine who is a Hardware Retailer here in Portugal, and he says that Intel will discard any responsibility over what happened to the Cpu.
This is his opinion... let's see what Intel has to say.
The big problem is that I will only get an answer from Intel within a week or more..
Now with Christmas coming ... just in 2018 I will have answers.

This append to more people.. No one here from Asus to give an opinion on the subject?

BIOS 3801 not yet on main support site

Hello fellow R5E'ers. Since this thread started I have been checking ASUS main support site http://support.asus.com and the latest BIOS they show is 3701. What is the site download link: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...-ASUS-3801.zip where you obtained vers 3801? After reading about your misfortunes with dead CPUs after vers 3801, I am scared off 3801for now. But I am curious what is that dlcdnet site? Could vers 3801 be a beta testing version, not yet released?
