G751 fresh Win10 install - won't recognize 980M

Drivers say they can't find compatible hardware and the GPU shows as "Nvidia Microsoft display adapter". When I forced the driver install (just the .inf), it shows as GTX 980M and games work, speccy shows it as what it's supposed to be,.. BUT.. I still can't install drivers normally as they say there is no compatible hardware. Also, if I "update the driver" through the device manager, Windows 10 slams its "Microsoft display adapter" on it. What's going on??

Maybe try installing the Asus drivers from the support website just to get them in, and then try to install the up to date Nvidia drivers? discrete graphics in a laptop can be finiky. Bought a Dell for my daughter for xmas. It wont take drivers from Intel for the onboard, it will only take the Dell branded drivers.
(ROG has simply become too expensive compared to the competition with same specs... 😞 )
