Welp in Asus' only official statement of: https://www.asus.com/News/V5urzYAT6myCC1o2

It only goes down to the x99 boards, so no z97, z87, ect.

So R.I.P Z97 user like me? This ain't fair man. If they support X99 than they should support Z97 as well. So what is all the promise Intel made that they will push out update for CPU been produced last 5 years ago?

I'm not sure RIP. The actual microcode needed to "fix" the issue has been released. It would require you to rebuild the BIOS. There are websites and I'm sure there will be a step by step tutorial on how to do it and it wouldn't surprise me if some entrepreneur type that will write the code up for you, thus only needing you to flash it, will come up soon "for a nominal fee" of course.

The problem with older motherboards is for each BIOS update even with the microcode, it can have other adverse affects. So Asus, like anyone else, will take those motherboards still under warranty and do the fixes.

It would be nice if they offered "out of warranty" fixes.

My guess it will be the same with Astek, MSI, Gigabyte, ect. There comes a point that when a board/device is out of warranty you aren't required to maintain updates.

Not every board in existence, but I bought the hero vii brand new in 2014. I think it's pretty reasonable to expect it to get updated for something this serious in early 2018 especially considering there are updates for boards that use the same i7 4790k proc. Even MS updated XP when there were serious flaws a few years back . This is an unusual circumstance and it should be dealt with by the board manufacturer not by me in my spare time fiddling with the bios at home.

    It also says:
ASUS RESERVES THE RIGHT TO CHANGE OR UPDATE THIS ADVISORY AT ANY TIME WITHOUT NOTICE.
So who knows? If Intel and other motherboard manufacturers are pushing for updates on z97 there may be some movement. If nobody else wants to update it then it's much less likely.

I've got a Haswell ThinkPad sat on my desk at work. Lenovo updated the BIOS for that just out of 3 year warranty machine with the updated microcode for this two weeks ago. It can be done. If Asus refuse they they're just being unreasonable.

There is a OS patch and a CPU microcode patch. The latter is where the performance appears to be hit most.

trying to update microcode with vmware tool..

So I am trying to take the Vmware tool for now to update the microcode on my new GL503VMF. However the Vmware driver is saying that it doesn't need to update the microcode for my CPU.

    Driver message:
An update for this CPU was not found. No update has been attempted.

I pulled the Intel microcode from the Linux microcode.dat file on the Intel sight that says its the latest one supposedly. Would 5E be the right microcode for the fix if anyone knows? What should it be? I thought I am still failing the windows test script after I installed the Vmware driver.
