Hi everyone, first post here even though I am long time ASUS user.

Intel microcode revision C6 for Skylake CPUs which addresses L1TF and SSBD vulnerabilities has been available since April 17, 2018.

Sadly, ASUS Z-170 PRO BIOS latest version 3801 is from April and it still has C2 revision which does not address those vulnerabilities.

I contacted ASUS support yesterday and I got this reply:

    Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting Asus, my name is Dimitris and i will try my best to assist you with your current situation.

Regarding the below case, unfortunately there is no official information about the time of the next BIOS release. Please check Asus website periodically and perform all Windows Updates.

In case you are not satisfied by our reply above, please inform us accordingly before filling the satisfaction form.
Damn right I am not satisfied with the answer, it should not take 5 months to include new microcode revision and publish such an important security update.

I replied to the email as well, we will see if that gets me anywhere.

    Hi,
Broadwell-e looks as though it took a big hit with oc not applying entering the os :/

Haswell-e at least for me using 2101 bios last bios purely for haswell-e is unaffected by the latest kb4100347 update so far

I'm waiting patiently for Asus to update the Z97-PRO GAMER - I wonder why there's such a long delay on this one

Yes it doesn't seem to make any sense - all other Z97-PRO boards seem to have an update. I keep thinking of trying it anyway but can't afford to be without the PC if anything went wrong.

OK this is ridiculous! how long has this problem been going on? other brands have already released a bios update to fix the issue. My 6950X on A R5E board has been sitting at 3.5Ghz when it should be 4.5 since September!!!! that's 2 MONTHS! grrrrrrrrrr

I raised a fresh ticket. Essentially the message back was, if you have a Z97-PRO GAMER, don't expect any updates unless they get a lot of demand asking for it. So I guess anyone with an interest would be advised to raise a ticket and let them know your interest.

With build 17763.348 1809 Microsoft introduced kernel optimizations like retpoline to get some speed back.
For my Coffee Lake retpoline doesn't work but enabling the new optimizations in registry does set
"BTIKernelImportOptimizationEnabled : True" and brings back a little performance.

The reg add didn't work but I manually added the two registry entries and added the values manually. I got notification that the retpoline is active. It does give me back some speed, maybe 5-10% of the speed I lost. Instead of being sup 200Mb/s I'm about 229 read and 209 write. I was 200/185

So I went back and turned off the Retpoline and took some reading and then turned it back on and tried again.
I'm definitely seeing some improvement, which is nice. When Spectre first came out I personally lost about 30-35% speed on my 4k Q1 random read/writes. Looks like the new Retpoline gets me back 4-7%. 4k Q32 raised by roughly a 100Mb/s which is also nice. Sequential read/write stayed the same, about 800mb/s slower than what it was originally. Overall I probably won't be able to tell the difference in real time but it is nice to see that Retpoline has some effect and I can actually see the changes through benchmarks.

I will put the steps of what I did. These are my steps as the "add reg" line shown in the microsoft article above, didn't work for me and kept coming up with a syntax error. For this to work you need to have installed Microsoft update: KB4482887

So I went directly into the registry.

    1. Enter registry and save. (in case you mess up)
    2. Navigated to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
    3. Right clicked and ADD NEW DWORD (32BIT)
    4. Renamed it to FeatureSettingsOverride
    5. Double clicked the new registry entry and entered the hexidecimal value as 0x400
    6. Right clicked and ADD NEW DWORD (32BIT)
    7. Renamed it to FeatureSettingsOverrideMask
    8. Double clicked the new registry entry and entered the hexidecimal value as 0x400
    9. Restarted.

You can go to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...ngs-powershell in order to test it through powershell. Follow all the directions including the last to reset the values back to the originals after you get your read out. In the end you should see the following:

    "BTIKernelImportOptimizationEnabled : True"

This will show that Retpoline is enabled. If at any time you have issues, restore your old registry. Once again this is how I did it. Your mileage may vary.
