GL771JW BIOS freeze

I am having trouble since about 1 week with my ASUS GL771JW laptop. It freezes on boot where the ROG logo appears for about 10 to 15 minutes. After that it boots (normally).

I use the laptop as a dual boot between Windows 10 and Linux Mint 18.3. Now, since this boot problem, I can only start Linux Mint, but if I select Windows 10, I end up waiting till eternity and the laptop gets warm and the fan turns up.

I can't quite figure out, how this problem was created. I've read in an article about some recent Intel update from Cannonical (Ubuntu) [1] that by accident gave itself access to some BIOS SPI.

Now my question. Is there any way to reset BIOS to some kind of factory setting? I already wanted to perform a BIOS firmware upgrade, but I an unable to do so, because I cannot load Windows 10 and run the appropriate software.

Anyone having the same issue?
