Goodbye Intel hello AMD

This thread is dedicated to chrsplmr https://rog.asus.com/forum/member.php?4668-chrsplmr longtime AMD champion!

So Intel have had it coming for a while and it's time ,as an interested consumer, that I did my bit for change in the industry.

Spectre and Meltdown being the final straw...or rather the Intel reaction to it...

70519

I could make a list...starting with pricing to broken features and performance...but I don't see the point.

Bottom line the consumer has to vote with their wallet and yes, sometimes with their conscience.

The old wallet isn't exactly bursting at the moment so this thread might not see immediate progress but it is happening!!

I was already humming and ha'ing over Ryzen 7 but I wanted quad channel memory...

and then came X399 and AMD Threadripper and of course no other board but ROG Zenith Extreme...

I have questions...

Any of you enlightened have experience with either of these RAM kits?

https://www.gskill.com/en/product/f4-3200c14q-32gfx
https://www.gskill.com/en/product/f4-3200c14q-32gtzrx

Flare X seems dedicated to AMD but... appears the trident is qualified on the board as well...easy enough to run?

I see they have 3600Mhz coming...by the time I get round to it they might be out...

Welcome to the dark side, we have cookies 😉

As the kits are single rank, you may very well be able to push higher than 3200MHz on them.
3200MHz is the sweet spot for frequency, after that it is more important to find tight timings in order to boost RAM speed.
If the kits are Samsung B-die, you are off to a good start.

This thread has 232 pages of good information regarding timings, stability testing etc.

The user Gupsterg does A LOT of testing and his post are usually really helpful.

He he...thanks...though you can't get much darker than the side I happened to be on LOL

OK that's useful info....3200 has been a sweet spot on my current platform so I'm used to that

I'll check out that thread...I know gupsterg to say hello to 🙂

Hi ya chap! 🙂 .

Welcome to the Rebellion! .

Both those RAM kits will be Samsung B die, single sided, single rank, which Ryzen/ThreadRipper luvs 😉 . I've been using F4-3200C14D-16GTZ on Ryzen/ThreadRipper, ~3500MHz was max I got on Ryzen and so far ~3466MHz on ThreadRipper. Planning on being on quad channel B die very soon 😉 .

IMO 3333MHz tight should be easily doable, 3466MHz reasonably tight should be attained with some tweaking as well IMO. 3200MHz super tight can beat other setups most of the time, but you're looking at circa ~1.45V+. Which I have read the RAM can take, personally with pricing of RAM I like to keep ~1.4V or less for daily use. 3333/3466MHz should be doable with that kind of voltage. Ryzen/ThreadRipper platform will require more VDIMM than Intel.

@OP welcome to the darkside and as a first time AMD user I can confirm they do have cookies!

I have the flare X (F4-3200C14D-16GFX) 4 sticks, what kind of timings do you have on your ram?

Iam able to push the ram to 3466 15-15-15-15-35-50 , 3333 14-14-14-14-34-48 , 3200 13-13-13-13-32-45 all @ 1.35volts

I find I get better day to day use out of the 3200 with the tighter timings but of course benchmarks love the 3466 with the custom timings.

Hey JpArizona! Thanks for the reply...good info...the cookies are important I wont lie

At the moment I have some Ripjaws V 3200....I wonder now if they would work OK

It's a 14-14-14-34 kit and i think they are a pretty good kit

But I like your results with that kit!

3466MHz The Stilt preset is 15-15-15-15-34-54, usually ~1.39V VDIMM with SOC ~1.09V.
3333MHz The Stilt Fast preset is 14-14-14-14-30-44, usually ~1.38V VDIMM with SOC ~1.05V
3200Mhz The Stilt Fast again :D, usually ~1.35V VDIMM with SOC ~1.02V.

Either I have slightly worse kit or not as tuning friendly. I tend to find HCI/GSAT can pass with lower voltages but when throw RB/Y-Cruncher/P95 at rig most of those shift (above is with max stability testing) and also may need to play with ProcODT/CAD Bus.

So far I have spent too much time testing UEFIs for stability with presets than tuning further the preset RAM timings 😮 . You have some nice results for sure 🙂 .

Hey Gupsterg!

Thanks man...so OK either kit will do. I would tend to the Flare as first option just because any more LEDs and they'll be filming the Close Encounters remake in my neighbourhood!

I'll be going over your posts here and at overclock while I get funds together for this!...

Ref the OP in the main chap, yeah LED bling not something that I like either. The way RGB control is implemented on G.Skill RAM is via SPD writes. Early on Aura (talking about Ryzen launch time) did not lock SMBus so you could get corrupt SPD. Elmor got ASUS team to fix ASAP, dunno if G.Skill or others ever sorted their SW.

Those will be perfect as well, those will be Samsung B die, use Thaiphoon Burner to check 😉 . I am currently eyeing up a kit of F4-3200C14Q-32GVK ie Ripjaws V 3200MHz 😉 .

I've just been over and had a quick look! Looks like the one-stop-shop I've been looking for 😉

Ha OK! So it seems I have RAM already...sweet...that is my exact kit!

Cool 🙂 , they'll be sweet for sure 😄 .

Just don't get the EK std or mono block. I think I placed some user experience on blocks in OP, if not will add ASAP.
