GL702VI Not Booting

PhilG55vw

GL702VI purchased in December has decided not to boot on a random basis. Seems to be tied to playing Destiny2, but not verified on that yet. Always happens after the computer has sat overnight, keyboard lights up correctly, ROG logo comes up and dots start spinning. And that's it, does not go any further. There is either quick HDD access about every 10 or 15 seconds, or no HDD activity at all. Up until two days ago long pressing the powerbutton and bringing up PC diagnostics, then restarting has progressed to a normal boot. Two days ago I did that repeatedly with no change. Finally got to diagnostics and did a rollback to a restore point, which worked for some unknown reason. I have run repeated memory, VRAM and chkdsks with no errors. There are also no errors in Device Manager, but the admin error log has many errors, warnings and a few critical errors involving "kernal power".

Asus flip card support offers nothing other than factory reset, which doesn't appear to be necessary at this point.

mine has does that as well, although not a lot lately.*

The only advice i can offer is try disabling Fast Boot in the system BIOS. Your not the only one with this issue and that is supposed to fix it.*

Thanks much for the reply, glad to know I probably don't have a bum unit. I've had good boots the last two days after rolling back to a restore point so will give current configuration a try before turning off the fast boot.

Thank you again!

Sounds like your HDD has problems, do you try another one? Or an ssd?*

Thanks for the post. Considered a bad SSD (NVMe) but it's giving no errors and runs chkdsk fine. Boot problem is also not consistent which may point to a different cause. Vendor I bought the 702 from has already offered to send me a replacement SSD, just not sure that's the problem at this point.

yeah, could be a defective unit, you should probably change the SSD, or you can install Windows again, maybe the Windows installation is corrupted or something like that, maybe a Windows update cause that.

Thanks but your "local" service center is about 2000 miles away. I have contacted Asus support but to date they've been no help other than suggesting updating the BIOS (already on current version) and making sure Windows is fully updated (it is).

Update: Returned the GL as after full resets it continued to hang during restarts/boots, usually with no recourse other than another reset. Looks like this model has a serious design issue as the problem did not appear to be SSN or memory related. Too bad, its a great computer when it works and my G55VW is so slow in comparison.
