One very good Rule of Thumb is, only buy new technology if you don't mind tinkering, because with 'Latest Generation Hardware' you will most likely at some point run into issues.
So it's best to sit on technology and buy hardware that has been out at least 1-2 years, so time is given to work the bugs out, let it settle and become a more stable platform, of course it all depends on the hardware. Of course as technology advances, hopefully it will only take a few months to work the bugs out. Ryzen is a good example of this on the Linux platform, it took around 6 months to get past some issues...
If you want the latest toys, must have, then buy New Technology, but remember, your mileage may vary!
If you want stability, then look at hardware that has been around a while and proven itself out in the field!
I personally have always taken the 'Stability' road, and I've never had a problem ever in computing with my hardware...
Have Fun!

There is something to be said for that approach. Certainly, new platforms are probably best not jumped into right at the begging if you don't already have a good grounding in troubleshooting, or you are expecting plug and play at the highest level specs!
But if you do your research and stay within the bounds of reason with your expectations then I see no problem...never had a problem myself even with latest stuff....touch wood...

moar powa!
Nice read. I have a question about the power supply. Putting my system together on PCPP my power requirement is 409w. I was thinking of getting a 650w gold G3. After reading your guide should I be looking at a 850w? CPU: 8700k (OC 5.0) GPU: 1080
Thanks!

Hey Velcade!
This is where these calculators let you down big time. I don't think many (any) have good data input for OCing. An 8700K at 5.0GHz could pull 160-170+ W during some avx task and an OCd 1080 could pull the same...bang goes your 400W PSU
That said...650W would be "fine"... but as stated in the Guide...long term overclocking happiness accounting for ageing and overhead...750W...depends on how long you want to keep system for etc. how much overclocking. If most of the time it's gaming, then you could comfortably get away with 650 sure...but like I say I don't recognise anything below 750W as a PSU...but on the other hand I don't want anyone to spend more than they have to...if you see what I mean. If you ever wanted to get a second GPU then an 850 is what you want...
What would your granny's pacemaker prefer...
I have a 1250W PSU that is about to be put out to grass...done 6 years over 3 or 4 multi GPU platforms without a hitch...If I'd gone for an 850W, which could have run the systems...mostly....I don't know it would have made it comfortably this long...in fact I'm kind of sure it wouldn't...
....is good!Last edited by Arne Saknussemm; 01-30-2018 at 08:59 PM.

So...just swapped out my 2012 vintage Seasonic 1250X...six years of flawless service.
Replacing with Seasonic 1200 Platinum...for Threadripper 1920X and GTX Titan X
1920X @ 4.0 GHz can draw going on for 300W
Titan X is rated 250W and OCing it will draw more...say 600W OCing both before rest of system
Where is my PSU giving max efficiency?
And if SLI becomes undead to me or I decide to run a couple of AMD GPUs...it will still hold near that even higher up the W scale.
Knowing you are OCing with the PSU at max happy....priceless....years of service ahead...

Ciao sandro c!
Very good to see you about my friend!
That hardware still rocks...no doubt about it...
The Noctua Mod still going strong!
