I suppose it's a matter of terminology. Both systems involve a fluid (usually water) as the primary heat transfer mechanism, although heatpipes take advantage of phase change thresholds while waterblocks and rads just keep bulk thermal mass cycling forward.
So the heat pipes in a heat sink like the Noctua NH-D15S will have both liquid and vapor phase water? The heat of vaporization extracts heat from the block and releases that heat up in the fins as condensation occurs? The condensed liquid would then flow back down to the block. I had thought it might work that way with a horizontally mounted motherboard with the block positioned below and the pipes ascending above it. But I wonder how it works if the motherboard is vertical, the heat pipes are horizontal and the liquid water might have trouble dribbling down toward the block. Are air coolers less efficient with vertically mounted motherboards than with horizontally mounted motherboards?

Heatpipes (as used in PC cooling) have improved greatly over the last decade. The better ones use sintered internal wicking structures which can function at near-maximum efficiency in all orientations, so you could mount that fat CPU cooler flat or dangle it sideways in a tower or even hang it upside down. Natural heat convection from the heatsink/radiator itself is worth taking advantage of when possible - why fight it instead of putting it to work for you? - but it's also very secondary to forced or ducted airflow through "small" enclosures like a typical PC chassis.

That being said, there are good heatpipes and there are poor heatpipes, and as always the better stuff requires more complexity (cost) and materials (cost) for the manufacturer. They're old tech from the 1960s and 1970s, nothing new here except new ways to mass produce them at lower cost. And there's really no way to tell what the internal structure of a heatpipe is without cutting it open, a sort of teardown/analysis I'd love so see on review sites when comparing products but alas also destructive and expensive enough that nobody does it. So we basically have to guess what sort of heatpipes any given cooler uses, and even guess whether or not they'll work in different orientations ... the only real indicator is measured temps. The NH-D14 and NH-D15 coolers have long been consistent favourites and proven performers, so they probably ain't made with the cheap stuff.

Hi people, ciao Mentol, ciao Korth, ciao R5Eandme, ciao Arne
I seem to be back at the time of my HW in 2013, when I passed from my poor deceased i7-960 after a lightning in a summer storm, to my current i7 3930K and any day i was on x79 forum to post.
Of my NHD14 I am sure that Arne remembers everything, and I am happy to have received so many answers regarding CPU cooling.
I chose to use air cooling because I already had it and at that time I paid it a lot. My full tower is called "full" because is...full of Cpu refrigerator!
My mods consists in having cut the first three external wings at the bottom because they interfered on the lugs on the Corsair Dom.GT memories a year before NHD15 exists!. Then I replaced the 14cm and 1200rpm Noctua fans with the 1600rpm Akasa, finally I realized that the metal of the CPU socket was very hot during the tests and then I attached a Dynatron radiator under the metal of the base with a big block of electrolytic copper weighing 400 gr. with many copper fins that has a radial fan of 8cm and 6000rpm termal controlled that has decreased the base temp. at 30C ° and subtracted another 4-5 C ° of temp. to the CPU under stress , so with 20 cycles of IntelBT, cpu @ 4600MHZ the maximum temp. it is 68 ° C, also while I added a 1400 rpm Termaltake fan that discharges behind the chassis and another one that takes air in front of the chassis and invests in front of the Noctua radiator .... in practice six fans cool the Cpu which in idle has 24C ° of temp. with 26C ° environment. I know I'll look like a crazy paranoid ... but I like it .... and I remember that even Arne appreciated ...

x R5Eandme happy to know an ... Italian-American who knows good food ... and as for the diet, it can go to hell!
    Ciao a tutti

Ciao Sandro C, Arne, Korth and Menthol. Ciao ROG.

Thanks Arne for sawing into that heat pipe to show what was inside. The moisture wick and sintered inner surface has great surface area and it makes total sense. It can allow water to migrate in any direction due to capillary action. Sorry it stank! That must have been an antimicrobial additive such as phenol. I know I am in the company of engineers and scientists: we don't NEED to know, we WANT to know.

Sandro C: I grew up with big loud family gatherings over the holidays with lots of lasagna, stuffed mushrooms and zuchhini, red wine and so on. Now my daughters and I do the cooking to keep the tradition. With such food, dieting would ruin your health.

Actually these two images are just random internet findings...not mine...

The laptop heat pipe was not as sophisticated as either of these two...quite large and more square...I think it was trying for that sandy inner surface...but didnt look as good as this pic...

As for what was in it...who knows...yeah I guess some chemical to scare off nosey investigators...
