I struggled with this too, and figured out a little bit. 1st the BIOS updated from firmware will not update. What I finally found to work was installing Asus commander, and I was able to update to 0401 from 0301 using the network option. I noticed that actually used a GR8 II K file, and I noticed I had downloaded 2 files with K in the name, I downloaded every single BIOS file I could find from the support site..... I updated with the 0701 GR8 II K file and it did not complain when I loaded it, I was also able to update successfully. Now in the BIOS I see 0701 with a September 11 2017 date, at least much newer than my Dec 2016 I started with. I'll check later and post the exact file name of the BIOS I used. I still notice a weird thing, when I go into Asus Commander and support about my system, the FIRMWARE is still 0401 there...
Hope someone from Asus can pop in and get the site updated correctly and get the tools working.

After a couple clicks the command screen refreshed and shows 0701 now. And this link appears to be the one I loaded from "Other OS"
