Turns out it was a bad display port cable , I think.... As I reset the CMOS & switched out the wires simultaneously, I can't tell which resolved the problem but given that I had a bad experience with another set of display port cables from that same manufacturer, I think it was the cables.

Either way, it's working fine now, thanks to the Asus rep who helped me.
