G751jy switching between battery and AC. Shuts off when stressed.

GPU-z logs the GPU, but I couldnt find a program that logs the CPU in a file so I can look at it later? Only the .CSV file to HWiNFO, which I couldnt find a way to read :O. Anybody who knows?

TEST RUN 1:

From my first test run, I tried to play Company of Heroes 2 on the lowest settings. Today it only flickers to battery sometimes. Here is a GPU-z sensor log from when it happens. You can see at the 30 second mark I alt-TAB into the game, and it changes to battery for 4 seconds. As you can see from the picture below, the GPU memory clock changes, as well as the PerfCap. (Note: this flickering to battery happened in the game maybe 5 times in a period of 10 minutes, and also in Windows when I am opening folders and Chrome.)

TEST RUN 2:

So I tried Heroes of the Storm with high graphics, and the laptop shut off after a few minutes in game. Actually it shut of while we were loading into the game (after the hero select and the menues). As you can see, the GPU Load [%] , Memory Controller Load [%] is very low right before the shut down, because there werent much graphics, only the load screen.

Here is the GPU-z log in a .txt file from when I started the game, to when the laptop powered down: http://m.uploadedit.com/bbtc/1517764728363.txt
HWiNFO64 for the same timespan: https://share.rtechsupport.org/2327-HWI_LOG_HOTS_1535.CSV

One more thing to note is that when I boot up the laptop again, I can clearly see that it stays on battery for a few seconds during the ROG logo (before windows boots). I can see this because I have 100% brightness on battery and 0% on AC. (When I tried to boot without the battery yesterday, it wouldn't even boot into windows).

TEST RUN 3:

Heroes of the storm with lowest graphics. 30 minutes in-game, with actual gameplay and no shut downs. Changes to battery approximately once a minute for two seconds.

At about 28 minutes it changed to battery, and didn't change back. I turned off the computer manually and when I was back in windows, it recognized the AC again.

HWiNFO64 log of those 30 minutes: https://share.rtechsupport.org/hwi_log_hots_1545.CSV
GPU-z log of those 30 minutes: http://m.uploadedit.com/bbtc/1517769077744.txt

Screenshot of those 30 minutes on GPU-z: https://i.imgur.com/e9K9eK2.png

Since I am not able to view .CSV files, the only thing I notice from the GPU-z logs are the GPU Memory Clock changing to 799.8 and the PerfCap Reason to 1 during the AC disconnect.

TEST RUN 4:

So with FurMark there isnt much to say, I run it, and it shuts down before the graphics appear.

Hey there I already replied to your other post, but UP because this is some very interesting testing!!!

I had the issue when running PUBG a lot.

Now, as I said in your other thread https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?99738-I-have-the-G751jy-SWITCHS-TO-BATTERY-WHEN-PLAYING-IN...
Dont you think there is a driver issue ?

EDIT: AND do u have a battery on?

Thanks for your reply, this is highly appreciated. The testing doesnt show anything valuable for me though, only that some number change when it switches to battery. I couldnt find any patterns of things that happened before the change.

Maybe there is a driver issue, but this have happened for 6 months now with many different drivers. This post you showed me is a different card, but he used drivers from 2 years ago. That is something we might try? Did you try to downgrade your drivers?

Yes, I have to boot with the battery, if not my laptop wont even boot into windows. If i boot with the battery and the AC, the first thing i see is the ROG logo, and since i have 100% brigthness when i am on battery I can see that it starts with the battery only, no AC - and then it changes to AC (0% brightness).

You asked me what is the software I am using, you mean what drivers? Now I am using the newest one from Nvidia for my 980m.

But yeah lets look into downgreading our drivers? 😄

Looking at your logs, seems PerfCap goes to 1 when switching to battery, so seems it is a power problem, as I suspected. When I have some spare time I will try to downgrade to 347 driver version (2015) to check, if you can do it also would be great.

Update:

After downgrading my graphic driver to the version mentionned in the post nothing changed.
So finally maybe it was a wrong call... Didn't work for me

I'm pretty sure the battery I changed is perfectly fine but now my laptop won't recharge anymore.
Or it recharges randomly for a few seconds...

I fear we all have the same problem: defective motherboard, specifcally charging circuit or power ic. I tried the brick replace with no luck, and I don't see it can be a software/driver problem. Perhaps someone can help us to pinpoint the problem exactly and fix it. The worst thing my laptop were ok before sending to ASUS 😞

This is the last time I buy a Gaming Laptop, especially ASUS ROG.

These models have a major issue with PSU,just look at the hundreds of threads on Rog forum or others... One of my friend also had this problem with an older ROG

From my point of view it is a pure scandal that a laptop has to rely on AC + Battery to function properly!!
This ROG laptop is simply oversized and ASUS engineers didn't even think it was problematic.
Too bad because they will loose a lot of customers.

I'm writing this from a Toshiba Media Laptop which I buyed in 2011.Battery is dead but the laptop runs fine on AC! I can still play Skyrim on it..

I'm throwing this garbage rog laptop out now... Funny thing the CPU is really good, the gtx970 is still relevant but this bull**** PSU is just planned obsolescence!!
Served me 2years 6 month, for 1700$(1400€)!! outrageous

My six pence is my G751JY is a three year old laptop, I'm not surprised the battery has turned senile. Kinda nice its taken this long for the battery to go really.

My G751 has been an architecture firm render rig by day and a baller gaming rig by night, daily from out of the box fresh to today. It's been in a bag on my back making multiple trips every day across London, monthly trips around Europe and further afield. The keyboard is still beautiful, the screen hasn't lost any of its crisp rigidity, it still monsters through triple A titles and CAD renders leaving most laptops (and some DTs) in its wake. I take pride in telling people my ROG laptop is one of my best purchases. I've had three years of plonking down at tables of white MACs with this beast and basking in the glory of watching eyes stare at the glowing red logo as I blast them all with hot air from the exhausts. Three years ago this was the best money could buy and I feel it nailed my every expectation.

Well, I hope the thread don't turn into a bash or defence of ASUS ROG, but a way to solve the problem we have. I really loved until today the performance of the laptop, was outstanding until it broke, more stable than my main gaming rig, a tower monster with a 980GT and a i7 5820k.

For me, the battery is fully functional. It may have 20 cycles at most, as I never used the laptop without AC, and the few times it depleted was due to the problem or just I forgot to plug the brick to the wall.

Today, works almost as day one, 2 hours with regular desktop work, 45 minutes playing. And yes, it plays ok from battery.

So the problem is located in the power supply circuit, the power that goes from that circuit to the 980M is not enough from my humble point of view. When the 980M takes the power from battery it works as should. Just my two cents and my case.

Yeah I think there is a serious problem on the motherboard that I am not able to fix with my limited hardware skills. Its sad, because I used to love this laptop too. It served me good for one year, but now my $200 acer chromebook is more valuable.

Glad to hear that you're happy with your ROG Luke, I was too, until it started not to work.

Its working for many people, and its not working for many people. What it should do is work for everybody, wouldnt you agree?
