Refresh Rate
Refresh rate refers to how frequently a display can draw a complete new frame on the screen.
Most conventional displays are limited to 60Hz, meaning they can only show up to 60 full frames per second. At a minimum, the panels in gaming laptops double that refresh rate to 120Hz, enabling you to see up to 120 frames per second.
The panel relies on the GPU to produce those frames, but modern graphics processors can easily crank out triple-digit frame rates. When paired with high-refresh-rate displays, they deliver smoother and more responsive gameplay.
Response Time
Response time refers to how long it takes for individual pixels to shift from one colour to another.
Display makers frequently measure response times differently. To provide the most accurate assessment, ROG tests response times across a range of different transitions for each red, green, and blue subpixel component. The grey-to-grey response time published on our spec sheets is the average of those values.
Slow response times often create blurring or ghosting artifacts that leave a visible trail behind moving objects, especially in fast-paced games. Faster response times produce a sharper picture that can improve target tracking and accuracy.
IPS
In-Plane Switching (IPS) is a type of panel technology that uses a parallel crystal structure.
Early laptop displays were based on Twisted Nematic (TN) technology that twists light 90° as it passes through the liquid crystal structure. Applying voltage untwists the structure into a vertical orientation that blocks light. The optical properties of the crystals vary with the orientation, leading to undesirable changes in colour and brightness at different viewing angles.IPS and IPS-level displays were created to combat the shortcomings of TN technology. They feature a liquid crystal structure that maintains a horizontal orientation in both on and off states. When voltage is applied, the crystals rotate 90° in the same plane as the panel to let light through. This type of display technology produces rich colours with outstanding accuracy across wide viewing angles.
100% sRGB
sRGB is a colour space commonly used for digital materials. 100% refers to the ability to produce all the colours in this range.
The sRGB colour space was created in 1996 to define a common range of colours that could be reproduced by monitors, printers, and digital platforms.While there are newer colour spaces that encompass a wider variety of colours for specific purposes, sRGB is still the one most commonly used in digital spaces today.
100% DCI-P3
DCI-P3 is a larger colour space commonly used by the film industry. 100% refers to the ability to produce all the colours in this range.
Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) is an association of cinema production companies that created their own colour space to standardise practices across the professional film industry.DCI-P3 encompasses a broad range of hues that’s much wider than the sRGB colour space. Although it doesn’t expand as deeply into green as Adobe RGB, DCI-P3 includes more reds and yellows.
100% Adobe RGB
Adobe RGB is a larger colour space designed to convert to the CMYK standard used by professional printers. 100% refers to the ability to produce all the colours in this range.
Adobe created their own colour space with a wider range of colours than the sRGB standard. In particular, Adobe RGB has more shades of green and cyan. It’s widely supported across the Adobe software suite used by creative professionals worldwide.Adobe RGB is particularly well-suited to print media because its colour space largely encompasses the CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black) standard used by professional printers.
High Dynamic Range (HDR)
High dynamic range (HDR) describes the ability to display a broader spectrum of colours and contrast that looks more lifelike.
HDR is used to describe displays that can produce a greater range of both contrast and colour than what is possible with standard video formats.Conventional video standards communicate luminance and colour data based on specifications designed for older technology. Today’s displays can produce brighter whites, deeper blacks, and a much larger palette of colours. They can also offer more granular control via higher bit depths that enable smoother colour gradients, and local-dimming backlights that allow greater contrast.
There are many HDR standards with different requirements for the brightness, contrast, and range of colours that a display can produce. Games and other content must be adapted for HDR in mind in order to take advantage of the greater dynamic range that it provides.
Super-Narrow Bezels
Super-narrow bezels shrink the frame around the display to enhance immersion and minimise the system’s footprint.
To enable superior immersion, ROG frames displays with super-narrow bezels. This streamlined design offers a higher screen-to-body ratio that minimises distractions, drawing you deeper into what’s on the screen. Slimmer bezels take up less space, which also allows us to fit larger displays into smaller laptops that are easy to take anywhere.

Adaptive-Sync
Adaptive-Sync is a technology that allows the display to vary its refresh rate to match the frame rate of the GPU.
Game performance varies constantly depending on what you’re playing and what’s happening in the scene. Most displays refresh at a consistent rate, which creates problems when new frames aren’t ready at the right time.Adaptive-Sync dynamically adjusts the refresh rate of the display to fit the frame rate of the GPU. Closely coordinating frame delivery eliminates visual tearing that can ruin immersion. It also minimises stuttering and input lag that can hinder your game.
Synchronized frame delivery is also known as variable-refresh-rate technology. Adaptive-Sync is an implementation based on the DisplayPort standard.

Pantone® Validated displays guarantee accurate colour reproduction that’s faithful to the globally recognised Pantone palette.

Pantone LLC is an acclaimed company best known for creating the Pantone Matching System (PMS). PMS is a proprietary colour space frequently used in graphic design, fashion, print, manufacturing, and other arenas. It helps maintain accurate colours between both digital and physical mediums, and across different materials.
Pantone® Validated certification is given to displays that are proven to reproduce colours with superb fidelity to the globally recognised Pantone Matching System.
High-refresh-rate displays offer serious advantages for all gamers, whether you’re into competitive esports or blockbuster RPGs. They put more complete frames in front of you per second, making gameplay and animation smoother and more engaging. Faster refresh rates also reduce the delay between full frames; a 60Hz panel draws a new frame every 16.7ms, while a 120Hz display cuts that time to only 8.3ms. In games where reaction times are critical, every millisecond counts.
Early gaming displays achieved higher refresh rates using TN (Twisted Nematic) panel technology. While these panels were fast and cost-efficient, they compromised colours, especially at off-centre viewing angles. That wasn’t an acceptable trade-off for ROG, where we wanted to combine vivid visuals with fast performance no matter how you looked at the screen.
To meld outstanding speed and colour, we turned to a variant of IPS (In-Plane Switching) display technology appropriately dubbed AHVA, for Advanced Hyper-Viewing Angle. We worked closely with our panel partner to develop 120Hz IPS-level panels that doubled the speed of conventional displays while delivering a rich palette of consistent colours across wide 178° viewing angles.
Our first 120Hz IPS-level display debuted in the ROG G752VS, a formidable desktop replacement designed for gamers obsessed with performance. The versatile combination of high speed and vibrant colours appealed to a much larger audience, so we quickly brought similar technology to a more portable chassis in the Strix GL502VS, and then to a new class of ultraslim laptops in the very first Zephyrus.
By introducing 120Hz IPS-level displays to every form factor, ROG gave gamers the freedom to choose the machine that best fit their needs. These options reinforced our commitment to creating a wide variety of portable gaming devices that empower users to do more than play, and redefine what gaming laptops can be.

The precedent-setting work we did with 120Hz IPS-level displays led to a collaboration with chemical giant Merck to develop even faster display technologies. Alongside ROG, Merck created a new liquid crystal structure that puts crystals in a low viscosity environment that allows for faster switching at lower voltages.

Four months later, we made 144Hz displays available across our entire gaming laptop line-up, opening up the field of competitive play to anyone with love for the game.

The new liquid crystal structure used for 144Hz lowered response times to 7ms, but we weren't completely satisfied with the results. Desktop gaming monitors at the time achieved even lower response times with IPS panels by using an overdrive algorithm that applies more voltage to accelerate pixel transitions. They implement it using scaler hardware that isn't used in laptops, but we worked with our partners to integrate overdrive into a new timing controller and firmware for gaming laptop displays.
Overdrive intentionally overshoots RGB targets for individual pixels, requiring careful tuning to avoid introducing visual artifacts or damaging the crystal structure of the display. We experimented with different algorithms to strike the best balance between high speed and minimal artifacts, and then included the ability to quickly toggle the feature in ROG Armoury Crate software.
Bringing overdrive to laptops allowed us to be the first to offer IPS-level panels with 3ms response times. We deployed it across an entire line-up of new models in April 2018, establishing a new standard for ultrafast gaming laptops displays.

For ages, laptop displays were surrounded by thick bezels that wrap an unsightly frame around the screen. This border distracts from what you want to see and makes the chassis larger than it needs to be.
Smaller bezels help reality melt into the periphery, keeping your focus front and centre, but they pose significant challenges for laptop design. Bezels offer protection against impact and often house circuitry and wiring that drives the display. To make the frame thinner, we had to rethink our design to maximise strength while staying slim.

HDR content is common on video streaming services, and the appeal is clear for general entertainment and day-to-day use. However, high dynamic range was and still is ahead of its time for PC gaming. The technology is so new that the ecosystem of supporting software still needs to catch up.

Although this arrangement can help to improve battery life, it requires that games support the native Windows API for HDR in order to correctly detect that the display can handle high dynamic range. We’re working with Microsoft and Intel to encourage developers to support the Windows API in more games.
