ROG Xbox Ally X20 vs ROG Xbox Ally X: What’s the Difference?

ROG Xbox Ally X20 vs ROG Xbox Ally X What’s the Difference

If you're looking for a high performance gaming handheld, the ROG Xbox Ally X and the new ROG Xbox Ally X20 are two devices that deserve attention.

At first glance, the two handhelds may look similar. Both feature AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processors, 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, 1TB of PCIe 4.0 storage and an 80Wh battery. So, what actually makes the ROG Xbox Ally X20 different?

The short answer is the display, controls, design and bundled experience.

The X20 keeps the core performance of the ROG Xbox Ally X while introducing a larger 7.4 inch OLED display, TMR joysticks, a refreshed control system and the exclusive ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses.

Let's break down the differences.

Specifications are based on ASUS's published specifications and can vary by market or configuration.

1. Performance: Is the X20 actually more powerful?

This is one of the most important things to understand about the comparison.

The ROG Xbox Ally X20 does not represent a major processor upgrade over the ROG Xbox Ally X.

Both models use the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, with 8 CPU cores, 16 threads, speeds of up to 5.0GHz and an AMD XDNA NPU capable of up to 50 TOPS. Both also feature AMD Radeon integrated graphics.

Both devices also come with:

  • 24GB LPDDR5X memory
  • 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage
  • 80Wh battery
  • Wi Fi 6E
  • Bluetooth 5.4
  • Windows 11 Home

That means you shouldn't buy the X20 expecting a completely different class of raw gaming performance.

Instead, the X20 is about refining the overall handheld experience around the same high performance platform.

2. The biggest upgrade: OLED

This is where the ROG Xbox Ally X20 really separates itself.

The ROG Xbox Ally X features a 7 inch Full HD IPS level display with a 120Hz refresh rate and up to 500 nits brightness. The X20 increases the screen size to 7.4 inches and switches to an OLED panel.

The X20's display offers:

  • 7.4 inch OLED panel
  • 1920 × 1080 resolution
  • 120Hz refresh rate
  • 100% DCI P3 colour coverage
  • Up to 600 nits SDR brightness
  • Up to 1400 nits HDR brightness
  • Dolby Vision HDR
  • FreeSync Premium Pro
  • Pantone validation
  • Anti reflection coating

The result is a display designed to deliver deeper blacks, stronger contrast and more vibrant colours.

For games with dark environments, colourful worlds or HDR support, OLED can make a particularly noticeable difference.

3. The X20 gives you a larger gaming canvas

The jump from 7 inches to 7.4 inches might not sound significant on paper, but handheld displays are different from traditional monitors.

Because you're holding the screen relatively close to your face, even a modest increase in display size can make games feel more immersive.

ROG also reduced the top bezel to accommodate the larger panel without dramatically increasing the overall height of the device.

So while the X20 is physically slightly larger, the increase is being used to provide a more expansive gaming experience.

4. OLED isn't the only display improvement

The X20 doesn't simply replace IPS with OLED.

It also upgrades the variable refresh rate technology from FreeSync Premium on the X to FreeSync Premium Pro on the X20. The X20 also supports Dolby Vision HDR and can reach up to 1400 nits in HDR mode.

For gamers, these features can contribute to smoother motion, improved contrast and better HDR gaming when supported by the game and content.

The X20 also uses Gorilla Glass DXC with an anti reflection coating, helping reduce distracting reflections when you're gaming in brighter environments.

5. TMR joysticks are another major upgrade

The X20 introduces TMR joysticks.

TMR stands for Tunnel Magnetoresistance. Instead of relying on traditional physical sensing mechanisms, TMR technology uses magnetic sensing to detect joystick movement.

For gamers, the important takeaway isn't necessarily the technology itself. It's what it can mean for control precision and the overall feel of the sticks.

The X20 also retains Hall Effect analogue triggers and adds impulse triggers, a transforming D pad and other control refinements.

The ROG Xbox Ally X already offers Hall Effect triggers, assignable rear grip buttons, HD haptics and a six axis IMU, so the X20 builds on an already capable control system rather than completely reinventing it.

6. The X20 is slightly heavier

The larger display and updated hardware do come with a small increase in weight.

The ROG Xbox Ally X weighs approximately 715g, while the X20 weighs approximately 756g.

That's a difference of around 41g.

For most gamers, the difference is unlikely to be a deciding factor, particularly considering that both devices are designed around the same 80Wh battery capacity.

However, if you're looking for the lightest possible handheld, the ROG Xbox Ally X has the advantage.

7. Battery capacity remains the same

Interestingly, both models feature an 80Wh battery.

That means the X20 isn't necessarily designed around giving you a larger battery.

Instead, the battery capacity remains consistent while the X20 introduces the OLED display and other hardware changes.

Actual battery life will depend heavily on the game you're playing, brightness, refresh rate, performance mode, frame rate and connectivity, so battery capacity alone shouldn't be used to predict real world gaming time.

The X20 does, however, come with a 68W USB C adapter compared with the 65W adapter supplied with the ROG Xbox Ally X.

8. Storage and memory are essentially identical

If you're comparing the devices specifically for their memory and storage, there isn't much separating them.

Both offer:

24GB LPDDR5X RAM
and
1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD storage.

This is good news for gamers because you don't have to sacrifice memory or storage by choosing one model over the other.

Both are equipped to handle a substantial PC gaming library and demanding multitasking workloads.

9. Connectivity is also very similar

Connectivity is another area where the two devices are closely matched.

Both support Wi Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4, alongside USB C connectivity and DisplayPort support.

The X20 does introduce an updated USB4 implementation with DisplayPort 2.1 support, compared with DisplayPort 1.4 support on the X.

For someone primarily playing games on the handheld itself, this may not be a huge difference.

However, for users who want to connect the handheld to external displays and build a more versatile desktop setup, the additional display capability could be useful.

10. The X20 brings a completely different visual identity

The ROG Xbox Ally X has a more traditional ROG aesthetic.

The X20, on the other hand, was designed as part of ROG's 20th anniversary celebration.

It features a distinctive translucent black and gold design, allowing elements of the internal structure to become part of the visual identity of the device.

This gives the X20 a more limited edition feel and makes it particularly appealing to ROG enthusiasts and collectors.

11. The X20 Bundle includes something the X doesn't

One of the most significant differences isn't actually inside the handheld.

The ROG Xbox Ally X20 Bundle includes the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses.

The glasses are designed to create a much larger virtual gaming display when connected to the handheld.

This gives the X20 a different use case.

You can play traditionally on the built in 7.4 inch OLED display, or connect the AR glasses for a much larger virtual screen experience.

For travellers, this could be particularly interesting because you can potentially carry a large screen experience without carrying a physical monitor.

12. Which one should you buy?

The answer depends on what matters most to you.

Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if:

You want high performance without needing the newest display.

The Ally X already features the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB of RAM, 1TB storage and an 80Wh battery.

It's still an extremely capable gaming handheld.

It's also lighter than the X20, making it a compelling choice for gamers who prioritise portability.

Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X20 if:

You want the best overall handheld experience.

The X20's biggest advantages are its 7.4 inch OLED display, improved HDR capabilities, FreeSync Premium Pro, TMR joysticks, updated controls, 20th anniversary design and bundled ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses.

If display quality and the overall premium experience are important to you, the X20 is the more compelling option.

ROG Xbox Ally X20 vs ROG Xbox Ally X: The verdict

The ROG Xbox Ally X20 isn't about reinventing the performance architecture of the ROG Xbox Ally X.

Instead, it takes an already powerful gaming handheld and upgrades some of the areas that most directly affect the gaming experience.

The processor remains the same. The memory remains the same. Storage remains the same. Battery capacity remains the same.

But the screen is significantly different.

The X20 gives you a larger 7.4 inch OLED display with 120Hz refresh, 100% DCI P3 colour, Dolby Vision HDR, up to 1400 nits HDR brightness and FreeSync Premium Pro. It also introduces TMR joysticks, an updated control layout and the exclusive ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses in the bundle.

So, if you're upgrading from the ROG Xbox Ally X, the decision comes down to one question:

Are the OLED display, upgraded controls and exclusive bundled experience worth upgrading for?

For gamers who want the most premium version of the ROG Xbox Ally experience, the answer may well be yes.

For gamers who already own the ROG Xbox Ally X and are happy with its performance and IPS display, there may be less reason to upgrade immediately.

Either way, both devices demonstrate how far handheld PC gaming has come: powerful enough to run modern PC games, flexible enough to access the Windows gaming ecosystem and portable enough to take your library wherever you go.
