When you hear that a monitor is fast, you might wonder just what that means. Does the display have a high enough refresh rate to allow for silky smooth gameplay, a low enough pixel response time to avoid motion blur, or both? It’s not much good for a display to refresh quickly if you can’t pick out your enemy clearly through all the blur. On the flip side, 60Hz monitors just can’t keep up with the hundreds of frames per second that modern graphics cards can churn out in today’s most competitive titles, no matter how quickly their pixels react. Rest easy, though. You’ll have no worries about what fast means with the ROG Swift PG329Q.

First off, this 32” panel with ASUS Fast IPS technology can hit a 175Hz refresh rate, and it offers an astonishingly low 1ms gray-to-gray response time. In days gone by, picking a monitor with both those characteristics meant choosing a TN panel with narrower viewing angles and potentially limited color reproduction, but the PG329Q’s panel is both quick and vivid. It also delivers wide viewing angles while keeping motion blur to a minimum.

The PG329Q’s 2560x1440 native resolution strikes a fine balance between speed and sharpness. It’s easy to drive at high refresh rates while delivering the crisp visuals you expect from a greater-than-Full-HD resolution. Contemporary mid-range graphics cards have little problem pushing high frame rates at 1440p in many titles, and you’ll enjoy the added sharpness over a 1080p display.

Gaming that’s both crisp and smooth

Raw speed is only the first part of the PG329Q’s one-two punch. The second is support for Extreme Low Motion Blur Sync, or ELMB Sync. This ASUS-exclusive technology allows variable refresh rate support to operate in tandem with backlight strobing. Our unique pairing of these technologies allows you to enjoy the tear-free, silky-smooth image quality of variable refresh rates alongside a drastic reduction in motion blur. These two features were mutually exclusive not too long ago, but ELMB Sync lets you have your cake and eat it too. The PG329Q also boasts a G-SYNC Compatible certification for plug-and-play variable refresh rate support with GeForce graphics cards.

Light and dark face off

More and more games support high dynamic range (HDR) rendering, enabling deep, saturated colors, brighter whites, and darker shadows for a more immersive and lifelike experience. The PG329Q is VESA DisplayHDR 600 certified, meaning that individual zones of the display can shine as bright as 600 nits, the HDR contrast ratio is at least 6000:1, and shadows remain deep thanks to the magic of local backlight dimming. The display can reproduce intensely saturated hues across the visual spectrum thanks to its 90% coverage of the wide DCI-P3 color gamut.

The PG329Q has an additional ace up its sleeve. Each unit is calibrated at the factory to ensure accurate colors from the moment you turn it on. Each display includes a detailed calibration report as proof of this important treatment. All told, this means that the ROG Swift PG329Q will present your HDR games and movies with aplomb.

I spy with my little eye

The Shadow Boost feature commonly found in our gaming monitors is a battle-tested tool to spot enemies that are ready to pounce from the darkness. The ROG Swift PG329Q’s modern utility belt includes the next generation of this technology—Dynamic Shadow Boost—to give you an even greater competitive advantage.
Shadow Boost traditionally increases the overall brightness to bring up dark areas of a scene. It’s quite useful, but it’s a global adjustment of contrast that can affect detail in bright areas as it reveals what lurks in the shadows. Dynamic Shadow Boost avoids these pitfalls. It splits the displayed image into multiple zones and evaluates each one carefully to boost shadows without blowing out highlights or distorting colors. With this technology at your disposal, no enemy will escape your notice, no matter where they’re coming from, and your game will still look great.

That’s not the last item in the PG329Q’s long list of creature comforts, either. This monitor works with our DisplayWidget software, letting you easily control hardware settings directly from the operating system. You can tweak color settings, Dynamic Shadow Boost, FPS counters, and crosshair overlays with ease. You can even set up hotkeys to switch monitor profiles on-the-fly, something that’s particularly handy if you’re switching gears from playing a RPG to a racing game and perhaps moving on to creative work like video editing.

Variable Overdrive gives you the control you crave

If you’ve ever wondered how to get the best image quality out of your monitor, you’ve probably come across advice relating to your overdrive settings. Overdrive is a commonly employed technology in LCD panels that lowers the perceived response time of the display. Choosing the right amount of overdrive for your monitor is an important step in achieving the best moving image quality. Too little, and you might notice annoying smearing. Too much, and you could see distracting artifacts at the edges of moving objects.

On many of our monitors, you'll find a Trace Free setting in the on-screen display that can usually be adjusted in steps ranging through 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100. Higher Trace Free settings result in more aggressive overdrive behavior. This range of adjustment can be used to dial in just the right amount of overdrive for all of the various fixed refresh rates a monitor can reproduce. For example, on the same monitor, a console displaying a game at 60 Hz might need a different Trace Free setting than a high-end PC capable of producing frame rates near 144Hz or even 240Hz for the best motion quality.

Variable refresh rate displays make dialing in just the right amount of overdrive more complicated. A setting that produces good results in one part of a monitor's variable refresh rate range might be too strong or too weak in another as frame rates—and refresh rates—naturally vary over time. The most sophisticated variable refresh rate monitors can continuously adjust the amount of overdrive being applied to ensure optimal image quality throughout the refresh rate range, but they don’t usually offer a lot of control over how aggressive this behavior is.

The PG329Q is the first of our displays to offer a feature we call Variable Overdrive. Like other high-end variable refresh rate displays, it continuously adjusts overdrive settings for the best image quality throughout its refresh rate range. It also allows fine control over the aggressiveness of this technique so that you can dial in moving image quality precisely how you want it. In the on-screen settings menu of monitors equipped with Variable Overdrive, you'll find five levels of adjustment, similar to our existing Trace Free settings. You can tune Variable Overdrive to make the display’s continuously-variable behavior more or less aggressive depending on your system’s performance and your own preferences for image quality.

Convenience and character

The ROG Swift PG329Q’s distinctive style is further enhanced by an RGB LED-illuminated ROG logo on the rear shell. That lighting is compatible with our Aura Sync ecosystem, so you can color-coordinate it with the rest of your setup in just a few clicks. The display bezels are extra-slim on three sides to make for a more immersive experience. The thin bezels are also perfect for making multi-monitor arrays for gaming or work. The flexible stand has all the adjustments you need for comfortable gaming, including height, tilt, swivel, and pivot. The input selection includes a DisplayPort 1.2 connector, two HDMI 2.0 inputs, and a pair of USB 3.0 ports alongside a headphone jack. To help keep your eyes sharp during marathon sessions, the backlight is flicker-free, and the display is certified by TÜV Rheinland for low blue light emission.
