Possible to use middle PCIE slot in 2-way CF?

So the CHV manual states that you should use slots 1 and 3 for 2-way. Unfortunately I can't use slot 3 due to case spacing issues. Just want to check whether or not using slots 1 and 2 (the middle slot) would work? I'm aware the middle slot can only reach x8 speeds. The manual doesn't seem to say whether it's possible or not.

It's definitely possible to use PCI-E slots 1 and 2 for CrossFire, the only problem you may run into is that the lower card may be so close to the upper one that it may block the air flow to the fan or fans of the upper one causeing it to run hot !

I use 1 and 3 for my SLI setup works well and the cards run cool

Isn't the 2nd slot an 8bit? I was curious as to how it negotiates for 16bit datapath in an 8bit slot? Or do they also run at 16 even though they are designated 8 and 4bit on the last PCIE slot?
