ROG’s GeForce RTX gaming laptop guide: meet the latest generation of a growing family
After raising the bar for desktop gaming performance and visual quality, NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 20-series is poised to do the same for laptops. Turing is going mobile, and the Republic of Gamers has a top-to-bottom lineup filled with updated models and brand-new designs. This collection elevates your portable PC gaming experience across a diverse family of form factors from the ultra-slim Zephyrus to the musclebound Mothership.
More than just vehicles for the latest GPU, ROG’s RTX lineup showcases our commitment to enhancing every aspect of gaming laptops. It’s filled with incredibly fast displays framed by amazingly slim bezels, amplifying immersion to draw you deeper into your favorite games. Advanced cooling ensures maximum performance with minimal acoustics and lets you choose between system profiles tuned for different scenarios. Add cutting-edge components and exclusive ROG features, and you have the right foundation for a full family that stands apart from the rest.
Gamers have different priorities, so our laptops follow suit. The desktop replacements emphasize performance over portability with a traditional clamshell in the G703 and a revolutionary standing form factor in the ROG Mothership. They’re joined by the ultra-slim Zephyrus S GX531 and a new 17” GX701 variant that’s augmented to go beyond gaming. The Strix SCAR II and Hero II reprise their roles in the esports arena with portable form factors filled with competition-grade hardware. This guide explains how they all fit together to help you figure out which GeForce RTX gaming laptop is best for your needs.
Before we dive into individual models, let’s start with their shared DNA.
Gorgeous graphics go beyond the GPU
NVIDIA’s Turing architecture augments familiar CUDA cores for programmable shading with RT cores for ray tracing and Tensor cores for AI acceleration. These hardware resources enable developers to create more realistic real-time effects that make lighting, shadows, and reflections more lifelike than ever before. Battlefield V is one of a growing number of games that use RTX effects to add another layer visual polish that takes the graphics to the next level. Even without next-gen eye candy taking advantage of their varied cores, GeForce RTX GPUs set a new standard for gaming and VR performance for portable PCs.
While the GPU generates frames, the display is responsible for completing the experience by putting them in front of your eyes. That’s why we work closely with panel providers to develop screens that meet our exacting standards and push the industry forward. All of our GeForce RTX gaming laptops are available with high-refresh 144Hz panels capable of delivering true triple-digit frame rates. Grey-to-grey response times of just 3ms minimize ghosting and blurring to produce a crystal-clear view that helps you see every detail when the action gets heavy.
IPS-level AHVA display technology allows us to offer jaw-dropping speed without sacrificing colors or picture quality. The Zephyrus S GX701 goes even further with Pantone validation that guarantees the color accuracy and uniformity required for serious creative work. Select members of our RTX laptop family are also equipped with NVIDIA G-Sync technology that synchronizes the refresh rate of the display with the frame rate of the GPU to smooth out performance stuttering, reduce input lag, and banish ugly visual tearing. Gaming laptops typically make you choose between the smoother experience of G-Sync and the longer battery life possible with NVIDIA’s Optimus tech, which intelligently deactivates the GPU to save power as needed; you can have a machine with one or the other but not both. However, the ROG Mothership GZ700, Zephyrus GX701, and G703 add a unique GPU switch that lets the same system go between G-Sync mode for gaming and Optimus mode for better battery life. All it takes is a few clicks and a reboot.
Hardcore horsepower that stays cool under pressure
Coffee Lake CPUs with up to six cores and 12 threads complement the lineup’s graphics prowess with plenty general-purpose processing power. These 8th Generation Intel Core processors combine the high clocks required for maximum gaming performance with the additional cores needed to tackle heavy multitasking and demanding workloads that go beyond gaming. System profiles tune performance and acoustics for different situations; Turbo mode opens the taps for maximum speed on demand, Silent mode dials back to lower noise levels for lighter loads, and Balanced mode hits the sweet spot for serious gaming. Switching between modes is as easy as pressing a shortcut key.
Effective cooling is critical whether you’re blasting baddies during an epic gaming marathon or loading up the CPU with video rendering and other intensive tasks. This is especially true for gaming notebooks with limited internal space for heatsinks and fans. The cramped quarters inside laptop chassis require clever engineering and attention to every little detail. All of our GeForce RTX laptops employ dual 12V fans capable of moving more air at higher RPMs than their 5V counterparts. The housings incorporate anti-dust tunnels that catch particles and direct them out of the back, which prevents buildup on the heatsinks that could otherwise compromise long-term performance and stability. Each heatsink is filled with loads of ultra-slim fins down to 0.1mm that help maximize surface area for heat dissipation while minimizing resistance to airflow.
We carefully tailor the cooling system for each model to ensure an optimal experience. Laptops with power-hungry GPUs add an extra heatpipe for the VRMs responsible for keeping the chip fueled, for example. Slender Zephyrus designs with especially limited space for cooling use our patented Active Aerodynamic System (AAS) to expand airflow along with the chassis itself. The ROG Mothership goes in another direction by replacing the conventional clamshell form factor with a new approach that allows the cooling to breathe deeper.
Feel right at home on desktop-style keyboards
Desktop-style keyboard layouts make our RTX series more familiar for player who go back and forth between their battlestation at home and a gaming laptop on the road. Separated blocks of function keys are easier to find, and the larger spacebar provides a bigger target for your thumb. Key presses fire faster thanks to Overstroke technology, which actuates earlier in the travel for a quicker response while also extending the post-actuation distance to improve typing feel. Anti-ghosting tech ensures that each press registers precisely, even if you’re mashing multiple keys at once.
RGB backlighting enhances the keyboard’s visibility and provides the freedom to choose your own colors and effects. Per-key lighting control is available on some models, as are separate zones that illuminate other accents. Aura Sync matches the laptop lighting with compatible peripherals like the ROG Delta headset and Gladius II Origin mouse; you can coordinate a cohesive complete system glow with just a few clicks in our Armoury Crate software.
Stick the landing with a strong supporting cast
DDR4 system memory is standard equipment across the board, and all models can be configured with wicked-fast NVMe SSDs. Intel Gigabit WiFi is also integrated from top to bottom, enabling greater-than-gigabit speeds with compatible 802.11ac Wave 2 routers like the ROG Rapture GT-AC5300. ROG RangeBoost technology uses pairs of antennas to improve signal strength and extend range. WiFi antennas work best in a specific orientation, so we carefully position multiple antennas to cover each other’s dead spots. RangeBoost constantly scans your surroundings and intelligently shifts between antennas to sustain the strongest signal.
Smart amplification closely monitors the speakers to prevent them from exceeding temperature and excursion thresholds. You can crank the volume without damaging the cones and enjoy louder output with less distortion. Headsets plug in via standard 3.5-mm audio jacks or a selection of USB ports in Type-A and reversible Type-C flavors. Our Sonic Studio III software simulates surround sound for stereo devices, and you can apply it and other effects to a wide range of devices that includes headphones, speakers, USB DACs, and VR headsets.
ROG Armoury Crate software unifies system tuning and lighting control in a single powerful utility. It includes four game profiles that load your preferred settings automatically when specific applications launch, instantly adapting your system to the title or task at hand. Link your laptop to Armoury Crate on a mobile device to put monitoring and control on a separate screen that you can keep an eye on without interrupting gameplay.
Replace your desktop with a portable powerhouse
ROG desktop replacement laptops shift into a higher gear to push performance even higher for hardcore gamers and power users who won’t settle for less. They’re factory overclocked beyond stock speeds and feature unlocked multipliers that let you pursue faster frequencies. The latest generation comes with up to a Core i9-8950HK processor overclocked to 4.8GHz across all six cores, plus boosted GeForce RTX 2080 graphics with a 200W TGP. G-Sync ensures the GPU and display work together in perfect harmony, while our innovative GPU switch lets you extend battery life with Optimus mode when deploying away from a wall socket.
It’s easy to focus on the upper body, but ROG doesn’t skip leg day. Our desktop replacements can be equipped with a trio of NVMe SSDs in an insanely fast RAID 0 array dubbed HyperDrive Extreme. Laptop RAID performance is usually limited by the four-lane DMI link between the chipset and CPU, which only has enough bandwidth for a single PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 drive. We avoid this bottleneck by connecting two drives directly to the processor, enabling industry-leading speeds up to an astonishing 8700MB/s. We also load up on system memory with four SO-DIMM slots for a maximum of 64GB of DDR4 RAM.
The networking is juiced with a 2.5G Ethernet controller that more than doubles the wired throughput of Gigabit Ethernet, opening the floodgates for faster internet connections and LANs. Thunderbolt 3 combines with additional display outputs to support a trio of desktop monitors, while ESS Sabre HiFi DACs produce pristine audio at up to 24 bits and 192kHz. Larger chassis leave more room for the keyboard, which allows us to extend key travel to 2.5mm for an improve feel. The key caps are gently curved to keep your fingers centered, and each one is backlit by an individual RGB LED with independent control.
Meet ROG Mothership: the future of desktop replacements
Conventional clamshells limit cooling and lock you into a fixed position in order to fit a form factor that can be used on your lap. That’s good compromise for a lot of laptops, but desktop replacements are too heavy to sit comfortably, so we reimagined the form factor to improve the experience. Instead of lying flat on a desk, the ROG Mothership stands tall to give the cooling system unrestricted access to airflow at the back. The keyboard separates and folds for maximum flexibility, giving you the freedom to position it for the perfect stance, and connect wired or wirelessly depending on where you want to sit. Detaching the keyboard reveals a row of four speakers that fire directly at you, creating an effective sound bar right beneath the display.
The improved airflow from the upright design lets us to shave down the chassis without sacrificing speed. At 29.9mm, the ROG Mothership is surprisingly slim for the power it provides. Some of the credit goes to the CNC-machined body, which is milled with precision for a perfect fit. It takes nearly 20 hours to carve all the pieces from solid blocks of aluminum, but that’s time well spent. The chiseled lines and precisely formed pieces reflect the care and attention to detail that permeates every aspect of this truly special system.
A bold vision for the future more than two years in the making, the ROG Mothership is more versatile than any portable desktop replacement before. It’s perfect for gamers, enthusiasts, and even professionals who want to break free from the restrictions of traditional clamshell form factors to focus on what works best on an actual desk.
The G703 carries the touch for desktop replacement clamshells
While the ROG Mothership represents the future, the G703 takes the present into the next generation. Sticking to a traditional laptop form factor requires beefier cooling and a thicker chassis to achieve the same performance as its deep-breathing sibling. The larger heatsinks and fans are so effective that the G703 can keep up despite having much less room to breathe.
Sticking to a familiar design imparts a different sort of versatility. The G703 can sit on your lap in a pinch, which for some will mean the difference between making and missing a deadline, especially when on location or on the road. Despite being rooted in tradition, the G703 still incorporates enough technology and features to ride the cutting edge.

Downsize without compromise with the Zephyrus S
Lots of gaming laptops slim down to fit into skinnier chassis, but far too many make unappealing compromise in their quest for thinness. Cooling is often one of the first casualties, so the Zephyrus S family thinks outside the box with an expanding chassis that opens up to increase airflow. Lifting the lid exposes a hidden vent that dramatically improves cooling compared to conventional designs. Shifting the keyboard also forward helps by leaving more room for heatsinks and fans, and decreasing the surface temperature under your fingers.
Innovative cooling is critical because we’re unwilling to give up performance. The Zephyrus S starts with a Core i7-8750H six-core processor and adds up to GeForce RTX 2080 graphics, bringing a true desktop-like experience to machines a tiny fraction of the size. In the GX701, the cooling is so effective that the GPU can boost up to 1330MHz at 100W, surpassing the peak speed and TGP of typical ultra-slim implementations.Despite downsizing, Zephyrus S laptops preserve the strength sacrificed by many ultra-thin laptops thanks to a metal chassis fabricated from aluminum-magnesium alloys. Finished to perfection with brushed surfaces and two-stage anodizing, this streamlined shell blurs the line between gaming laptop and professional workstation. The slim frame surrounding the display narrows the gap with reality to deepen immersion, resulting in a system that’s slim from body to bezel.
Ultra-slim laptops are designed to go anywhere, so we incorporate Type-C charging support via the USB Power Delivery standard. You can lighten your load on the road by using a standard 65W adapter instead of the larger power brick required for full performance. If the battery runs dry without a wall socket in sight, you can charge from the same USB power packs that top up your phone. USB power delivery also works in the opposite direction by accelerating charging for compatible devices plugged into the laptop.
Go big and stay slim with the Zephyrus S GX701
There is somewhat of a contradiction in the new Zephyrus S GX701. Despite occupying a chassis just 18.7mm thin, it thinks bigger with an expansive 17.3” display that feels larger than life. The combination of a slim body and super-narrow bezels make this the most compact 17” gaming laptop ever.
The larger display is more immersive when you’re gaming and more engrossing when you’re working. It’s also fit for creative work thanks to Pantone Validation. Each screen is calibrated at the factory to guarantee the color accuracy and uniformity required for certification. Our unique GPU switch further strengthens the GX701’s professional credentials by letting you toggle between G-Sync mode for a better gaming experience and Optimus mode for longer battery life, and a bigger 76Wh battery further extends run times.Thoughtful upgrades further set apart the GX701 from its Zephyrus colleagues. Per-key backlighting raises your RGB game and lets you personalize profiles for productivity and play. We also integrated a volume roller conveniently within reach of your left hand, complete with backlight brightness that changes automatically to match the volume. Instead of squeezing a sub-par webcam into the bezel, we designed a much better external unit that you can position where you want and capture high-resolution 1080p footage at a silky 60 FPS.
Big ideas and subtle enhancements make the Zephyrus S GX701 versatile enough to go beyond gaming and appeal to content creators, developers, and other professionals who need a powerful system they can take anywhere.

The Zephyrus S GX531 sets the standard for slimness
Putting high-end gaming components into an ultra-slim laptop is exceedingly difficult, especially when targeting a thinner chassis than ever before, but the Zephyrus S GX531 delivers with a remarkably compact body that’s a testament to ROG’s engineering prowess. The slender exterior measures nearly 15mm thin and leverages a 15.6” display with super-narrow bezels to squeeze into a smaller footprint, so you can easily stuff the system into bags made for laptops with much less power.
The Zephyrus S GX531 lowers its profile without scaling back on specifications. You still get cutting-edge parts and ROG essentials, they’re just squeezed into a slimmer package that lacks some of the extras available in the GX701. That makes the smaller Zephyrus S a more focused alternative for people who prioritize portability above everything else.

Made for MOBAs: meet the ROG Strix Hero II
The ROG Strix Hero II is optimized for MOBAs and ideal for gamers who want subtler styling. Its contrasting textures and cyber-text patterns are more restrained than the aggressive aesthetic of the SCAR, making the Hero more approachable for wider audiences.Instead of highlighting the WASD cluster, translucent key caps impart an extra glow to the QWER row. The Hero II is available exclusively with GeForce RTX 2060 graphics that are more than up to the task of pushing high frame rates in MOBAs and other popular games. Like with the SCAR II, NVIDIA Optimus technology conserves power by only activating the discrete GPU when needed, so you get longer battery life day to day and better gaming performance on demand.
