The ROG Xbox Ally is coming — here's everything you need to know

The ROG Xbox Ally is making a big splash at Gamescom 2025 — it's the first time gamers get to try our latest and greatest gaming handheld. We’ve taken everything we learned from the ROG Ally and ROG Ally X to deliver a truly next-gen experience alongside our partners at Xbox, and we want to share more about what that gaming glory entails. Here’s what you need to know about the ROG Xbox Ally ahead of its release on October 16, 2025.

The power of ROG and Xbox, combined

We have two models of the ROG Xbox Ally coming your way: the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X.

The ROG Xbox Ally is our most accessible machine, powered by an ultra-efficient AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor featuring four Zen 2 cores with eight threads and eight RDNA 2 GPU cores. Paired with 16GB of LPDDR5X‑6400 RAM and a 512GB M.2 SSD, you’ll have the horsepower and storage you need to play the latest games. And with the ROG Xbox Ally’s 60Wh battery, you can game for hefty stretches of time between charges, perfect for short flights and long car rides.

If you want to game even harder, the ROG Xbox Ally X packs an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, a new 8‑core/16‑thread Zen 5 APU with sixteen RDNA 3.5 GPU cores and an integrated NPU. The NPU gives your games extra AI-powered functionality like Automatic Super Resolution, a feature coming in early 2026 that upscales games running at lower resolutions for high-fidelity visuals and buttery smooth framerates. In addition to that incredible processor, the ROG Xbox Ally X sports 24GB of LPDDR5X‑8000 memory, a 1 TB M.2 SSD, and is powered by a heavy-duty 80Wh battery for extended handheld gaming action.

Tailored for the ultimate handheld gaming experience

Powered by Windows 11, the ROG Xbox Ally is optimized to minimize background processes so your games receive as much system power as possible. An aggregated gaming library, dedicated Xbox button, and enhanced Game Bar all help deliver a true Xbox experience within a handheld form factor, making it easy to navigate your ROG Xbox Ally and get straight to gaming. And when you want to tinker with your handheld’s more elaborate features, our Armoury Crate Special Edition software is ready to tune power profiles, joystick sensitivity, and a whole lot more.

The ROG Xbox Ally systems also benefit from Xbox’s new Handheld Compatibility Program, which sees the Xbox team testing and optimizing thousands of titles so you get an ideal handheld experience. If you see a "Handheld Optimized" badge next to your game, the game should be a perfect experience from the moment you boot it up — from controller support and button prompts to out-of-the-box performance. “Mostly Compatible” badges are reserved for titles where you may need to tweak a few settings before getting an otherwise flawless experience.

The Xbox team isn’t done tuning this handheld-focused experience, either. More features are already underway, like advanced shader delivery, which allows the Xbox app to preload game shaders during the download process. Advanced shader delivery will be available at launch for select titles, with more supported titles as time goes on. This feature allows supported games to launch exponentially faster and run more smoothly, removing the barrier between you and a true console experience in your hands. And you have freedom in shaping what that experience looks like — the ROG Xbox Ally offers unparalleled flexibility. You can download and install your games to run them locally, stream them from the cloud, or Remote Play them from another Xbox console in your home, with new games being supported over time.

The ROG Xbox Ally shines at Gamescom 2025

On August 20, we enlisted famed GTA V actors Ned Luke and Shawn Fonteno to help us show off the ROG Xbox Ally in all its glory, giving the world its best look yet at the handheld. Xbox also hosted their own event at their booth, which you can watch online here.

We brought ROG Xbox Ally units to our Gamescom booth, too. As such, many gamers have gotten hands-on with the device for the first time — so expect lots of fans and media outlets to deliver in-depth impressions, giving you a better idea of what you can look forward to when it’s time to grab your own ROG Xbox Ally.
