FAQ: ROG GR8 Console PC And G20 Small Form Factor Gaming PC

Small on design. Big on gaming!

The GR8 (left) and G20 (right) have been announced at the ROG press conference during Computex 2014. They represent ROG's best in small form factor PC design, and their size and performance scales as your gaming needs do, with the tiny 2.5 liter GR8 packing a 4th Core i7 and Nvidia GTX 750 Ti, while the marginally bigger 12.5 liter G20 fits in a 4th Gen Intel Core i7 quad-core and up to Nvidia GTX 780. Both are designed to be extremely power efficient, supremely quiet and cool running.

Which should I buy: GR8 or G20?

Both GR8 and G20 are small form factor gaming PCs - both are full Windows 8.1 machines that will do any task a normal PC can: email, office, entertainment, internets, gaming: everything!

We call the ultra-portable GR8 a 'console PC' because at just 2.5 liters in size it can bring PC gaming anywhere. It can fit neatly besides your HDTV, slide in small dorm room quietly or it can be thrown in a bag and taken to friend's houses or LAN's with ease. Its front IO gives it ease of use to be plugged/unplugged frequently, while its Miracast support is great for throwing movies from phones and tablets to bigger monitors or TVs.

Fundamentally the G20 is a bit larger at 12.5 liters - yet still considerably smaller than most 20+ liter mini-ITX cases on the market - and its more powerful a quad-core Core i7 CPU and GTX 780 means if you need max power in min size: the G20 is the one to buy. It's still much easier to move or fit in smaller spaces than a full desktop, and it looks just as cool on your desk with its 8 million color options to choose from.

Why does the GR8 'Console PC' use Intel/Nvidia when Sony/Microsoft/(Nintendo) chose AMD in their consoles?

  • ROG has always aimed to provide a wide diversity of game-capable hardware, and the GR8 is only the first 'console PC' we have publicly announced. We plan more in the future and we are certainly considering other combinations, including AMD options.

How much will it cost?

  • The GR8 will be competitive with other SFF gaming desktop PCs on the market, however the retail price depends on the exact specification available in each country as options like HDD/SSD/memory which can vary. More details will be available nearer the launch.

What OS does it come installed with?

  • The GR8 is pre-installed with Windows 8.1.

G20 FAQ

What is the spec of the G20?

Here is the specification ROG has announced at Computex, but it does not represent all possible specifications the G20 will be available in.

  • CPU: Up to Intel Core i7 4790 Processor
  • GPU: Up to NVIDIA GTX 780 Graphics
  • Memory: Up to 16GB DDR3
  • Storage: SSD + HDD options
  • Optical Drive: Up to Blu-ray/DVD writer
  • OS: Windows 8.1 Update 1

When is it available?

  • We aim to have a variety of G20 spec options on shelf in Q3, depending on the region and retail store. More details will be shared at the time of retail launch.

How did you make it so small?

  • The design is completely customized to create an extremely compact internal-to-external layout that maximizes power and cooling potential within its slim space.

Why does it use two external power adapters?

  • This was an intentional decision as a result of our extensive testing. Only the high-spec G20 models require two power adapters as the very high power demands of a high-end GPU are accommodated separately to the core system. An ROG branded bracket holds the two power adapters together conveniently and safely.

External power adapters are an advantage because:

  • The total size of the G20 is reduced,
  • They run 100% silent
  • It’s more power efficient: Our testing found a second adapter dedicated to the graphics card is an advantage over a single, larger power adapter, since this actually more efficient over the entire power range.
  • It enables the ultra-low power design that goes as low as 20W, so during long idle periods such as game downloading it saves the owner power and money. This is 50% more efficient than competing models.
  • Because it is more efficient, the hardware runs cooler.

G20 top2As an ROG mini-ITX PC, does the G20 use the Impact motherboard? If not, what MB does it use?

  • In order to produce the most powerful, yet smallest possible, quietest and energy efficient system, the internal structure and motherboard had to be entirely customized for the G20, therefore it uses a non-standard ROG motherboard.

Is it upgradeable?

  • In order to maximize its potential it has an extremely integrated design, therefore it’s not possible for users to upgrade the G20.

How much will it cost?

  • The G20 will be competitive with other SFF gaming desktop PCs on the market, however the retail price depends on the exact specification available in each country as options like HDD/SSD/memory which can vary. More details will be available nearer the launch.

What OS does it come installed with? Can I run SteamOS?

  • The GR8 is pre-installed with Windows 8.1 and is fully compatible with SteamOS should users wish to install it.

Will there be a Steam Machine (PC) version?

  • Yes! When Valve launches its Steam Machine software, ROG will offer a version with SteamOS pre-installed and the Steam controller bundled.
