Steam Client Updates Bring Broadcasting, FPS Counter
Two key Steam client updates in the change log caught our attention yesterday:
General
- Added Steam Broadcasting. See http://steamcommunity.com/updates/broadcasting for more info.
- Added in-game FPS counter to Steam Overlay
The integrated broadcasting allows Steam to stream your game to anyone from friends to the entire world (depending on your settings).
Given that a year ago Twitch game streaming was the fourth largest total US internet traffic, Valve is capitalizing on this trend as a community-centric feature, although this function doesn't replace Twitch as a YouTube-esq service with gaming channels; it's just live game play (well.. for now).
The in-game FPS counter is also enabled in the settings menu, and we recommend using the 'high contrast' lime green option as the standard grey text blends easily into the background of everything but sky. It's certainly a useful addition for those looking to see their game performance by number, albeit the current incarnation is basic with no ability to adjust the font size or record timed runs to take min/average/max numbers.
